gearbox change
« on: 10 June 2008, 17:27:30 »

I wonder if someone can help with some advice.

I have a low milage AR25 to swap out on my omega but I know there are somethings that need to be considered:

  • What consumables will I need (bolts, etc)
  • what is the minimum clearance necessary to get the box in and out underneath (having trouble sourcing big enough jacks and axle stands
  • anything else I need to think about?

cheers  :y

I had my gearbox out on saturday replaceing the clutch. I had the car up on 4 standard car ramps this gave me pleanty off room and was just the right height to get at the top bolts as well. Had the box out clutch replaced and in again in 3hrs 30 mins. Not bad on my own ;D

I doubt I could pass through security at the airport carrying my 3 tonne jack :D :D

In all seriousness, you need a good jack, not just the little halfrauds type trolley jack. The stands also need to be a good height.

A very good investment :y

Question for those who took their autobox out – How difficult is it to take the box out for one person?

Not sure about the manual box but the automatic box is heavy, and needs 2, ideally 3 people, without exotic working facilities, I'd say.

I would buy some Stainless Steel nuts and bolts to relace the snapped exhaust bolts, oh and some drill bits ;)

We are talking about automatic or manual gearbox? I think that Gaffers question was about automatic, not the manual which is really easy to take out.
Manual weights ca 20-30kg, automatic is 70kg and above. That’s why I asked the question, because, when I helped Sassanach take my gearbox out, car was lifted by 2m and it was still heavy for us two to take it out.
It is a big risk to take it out using just jacks. I might crash somebody, which is not nice  :(
