help needed with ignition
« on: 12 June 2008, 18:12:52 »

the history :-
not drove car for few days when got in the instrument panel lights were on this is before i put the key in,,, tried to start but battery was flat ,no probs jumping tho,, started and drove no probs but the lights stay on when key is taken out,, when moving the gear selector ( its an auto) sometimes they go out ,, if banged door they sometimes go out,, at first thought it was the cd player i fitted, thinking the memory feed was somehow passing thru the wiring harness,, took the cd player out and thought nice one lights gone out but then opened door and they came back on,,
sometimes it wont start because the engine light flashes and i have to try and catch it while its a solid light,,, like i said when started there is no probs at all,

any advise will be very welcome,,,
think first thing is to check the starter motor wires, then ignition wires but the list seems endless..
 thanks

I think your problem could be the ignition switch. Sloopy drive between the lock and switch maybe.

The only other way I can imagine the ignition circuit could be energised is by a "short" between a permanent live and the ignition curcuit live that comes from the switch.

I would definately check behind the radio for bare copper... There's not much room back there and a enough sharp edged metal to take insulation off wires while you are squeezing a new stereo in.

Certainly nothing to do with the starter circuit...

cheers..
the radio had been in for at least 2 months,,, it started playing up on sunday then i stopped using the car,,, i agree there is zero room,, i`ve taken the radio out and checked and all seems in order,, bit puzzled as to why the gear selector affects the lights on the ignition ,, i give the shroud a tap thinking the back on the barrel where the connector may be loose but nothing,,, the live is deffinatey touching somewhere,,, just where??
i will strip the shroud off and see,
was thinking maybe a wire off the starter may of be arching but you think thats not possible?
 thanks again
