Possibly buying omega but......
« on: 14 June 2008, 01:08:58 »

iys done 142k. Mostly motoway miles to lithuania(sp) (although its a english car (Y reg 2.2 cdx) but a lithuainin owner). Its got a pretty full history with all the belts, water pump, pulleys etc changed 5000 miles ago. My only worry is the auto box. What are these like after this many miles? ive heard a few bad things about auto boxes from the 80s from my dad, saying that they break easily and are hugely expensive to replace! is this still the case of an auto box made in 2001?

GM have been making auto boxes for 50 years now and the ar25 is fine as long as maintained- it needs to be checked for oil level which is awkward as GM were so confident in the box design they made it 'sealed for life' so it hasn't got a dip-stick, plenty of info on this site to check it out :y

cool, cheers. Also one other thing, when test driving the car, a light appeared on the dash. It was just below the rev counter, and was red/orange car symbol with a spanner through it. I asked matey selling the car, what that ment, and he said it was the service due light. But his garage couldnt remove the light as only vauxhall can do that.

Hope my description of the light is adequate. Atleast i think thats what it looks like :) if some one has a pic or diagram of the dials with the warning lights i could point out the one i mean =]

Fault detected by engine ecu.  Without getting a code reader on it, cannot say what it is

fair enough,

strange light then as it looks just like the service light in my dads cougar, and the engine management light in my corsa was an engine with the spanner through it.  O well, off to find another omega now . . . . .. . .

ill give the blokey a ring and see if he'll let me do the paper clip test. Looking at the link above, it seams pretty much the same as how i did on my corsa once, but it does say this

Please note: DBW engines (2.2/2.6/3.2 petrols and 2.2/2.5* diesels) need a code reader

this omega is 2.2, does that mean i need a code reader, or can still do paperclip.

Aren't 2.2's DBW? If I'm right, a paper clip test can't be done & you'll need a code reader of some description to talk to the car.
