Internet usage by age or experience
« on: 23 October 2007, 21:28:27 »

One thing I have noticed is that people use the interenet differently depending on how long they have been using it.

Very long time, news groups, forums, torrents

Medium term, forums, torrents, instant messaging

New, social networking, youtube type sites, instant messaging

This is from watching people at work.

There seems to be an invisible gap between the older and newer usages, lots of people have never come across news groups whereas when I started they were used as forums are now.

Like a lot of long term internet users I have not come across these social networking sites and with plenty of forums don't see why they are so popular - especially as some of them have silly names or are invite only to join.

I also notice that the longer you have been on the more likely you are to use different search engines, especially as gooogle is not very old compared to yahoo or altavista

I do all of those highlighted, although very rarely newsgroups these days (most people have moved to forums for discussion type stuff). Use instant messaging mostly every day to alleviate the boredom at uni, in fact I have Adium connected to MSN network right now. I browse youtube a fair bit, although don't post as I can't be bothered, and yes, social networking too (mostly Bebo but I have facebook too for uni contacts -- hate Myspace, it's horrid). Actually I've recently taken to exchanging Bebo accounts when chatting to girls out at the weekend instead of phone numbers, it's the 21st century after all ;D I find it's most likely to be successful in the student union and studenty bars, other places are more likely to get a puzzled look when you ask for their bebo :D

I don't spend anywhere near as much time online as some of my mates though, and I'd suggest the girls are probably more into it than the guys are. Quite a change from when I started high school when it was almost exclusively guys who had any interest in computers.

People Do they use the internet :question

They play games
They use alleged social networks
They wander around the net without a clue

This is in the main what they are taught

"360,000 people employed in IT do not have a clue"

Use the internet perhaps your header should have read

Internet usage by age, experiance, education.

You will have answered your own question

computer users an abuse of the term computer

It is not difficult to observe to which group people belong

just this evening a student studying computer science unable to subtract 5 from 47
and just laughs, oh boy we have a lot to look forward to.

I can relate to what Martin has posted there.
my useage is newsgroups and forums, torrents are something I don't do a lot of.

my son has a completely different useage, his is pure social networking and can spent hours on face ache (or whatever it is called) you tube and my space as well as MSN but yet on a face to face social level has zero social skills.

for me social networking is getting out and meeting people in the real world, just can't see the value in these social sites, but then I am from a different generation and in the same way as my son can't see the point on forums

Funnily enough, I use the net as another form of communicating with people I already know. Every one of the contacts on my list I've met in real life first, and added them so I can keep up to date with what they're up to and vice-versa. I'm sure you could go back 50 years and get people saying "chat to friends on the phone, bah I'm having none of that, if I want to speak to someone I'll spend half the day travelling to do it"  ::)

I socialise "in the real world" as much as I have time for, I can't remember the last weekend I wasn't out with a bunch of mates from various eras in my life, but I can't expect to meet up with all of those on a regular basis (especially those who have moved away) so "social networking" sites provide a handy way to keep track of all that's going on.
