Aargh coolant leak
« on: 19 June 2008, 18:45:22 »

I've sprung a leak, looks like its either dripping onto the rearmost exhaust manifold stud or coming out from behind there. I can't see where it could be coming from.
I'm losing about half a litre a day (60 miles)
Any ideas?

Sounds like the same leak I sprung yesterday!!!  I reckon it's the HBV or related pipework!

As a matter of interest, are the HBV's easy to replace and what is the cost?

Easy enough, but fiddly, there is a guide, cost about £30,

we did one in about 1/2 hour this week

Wipers off
Scuttle off
vac pipe off
3 hose clips off
hbv out
hbv in
3 hose clips on
vac pipe on
scuttle on
wipers on
wash cuts and scrapes on your arm
cup of tea  :D

I'm doing mine in about an hour... Just letting it all cool down a bit before I start because I had to go and collect the part!!

As for cost... I don't have a TC yet but spoke to Andyc and the price difference wasn't worth paying the postage!! I grabbed a litre of anti-freeze as well to top up as I don't have much left from the last lot I bought and the grand total was £37.91!

At least it wont break the bank!! I don't think I'll be quite as quick as half an hour but I'm not expecting it to take long to change. Quick cuppa before I start I think!  ::) ::)

to be fair took me about 2 hours 1st time i did one, working out how, plus i didnt have a suitable too to remove the hoseclips.

I found hoseclip pliers easeist to take them off, but small, long nosed vice grip pliers easier to put them back on

Luckily I have lots of tools left over from my days earning a living with spanners, one of which is a marvellous set of flexible hoseclip pliers!!!  :y :y

... and you will need a swear box..

actually I found a small set of mole (vice?) grips useful given the restricted room in there.
