V6 Engine Removal

Can the 2.5 V6 engine be removed without first removing the gearbox? The Haynes manual says to first remove the gearbox. Is that essential or can it simply be unbolted but remain in place? Alternatively can the engine and gearbox be removed together?

Both options are definitely possible...will need cats/exhaust removed first though...

Either is possible.
Engine and box combined is heavy and long so the car has to be over a pit or jacked up quite high at the front.
I wouldnt want to attempt matching up an engine and box with the box already in the car.
I think removing the box first is much easier.

Personal experience with Haynes manuals has always been great...

...until I had an omega!

I've never removed an engine from the v6 but tend to find every job I've done on mine requires a bit of common sense as the Haynes manual suggests some really wild ways of getting at things.  For example to get at the hand brake adjuster it told me to drop the exhaust and take the prop-shaft off when all that was required was to remove an exhaust heat shield.  

I doubt you'll need to follow the manual by the letter, trial and error usually prevails.  I can't help thinking you'll be able to leave the gearbox in place until the last moment.  As said though, never removed the v6 so wait for a reply from someone who has done this.

Engine and box together removal is pretty easy with an engine crane...

I have removed and refitted a v6 and left the autobox in the car. I put the front of the car up on ramps in the driveway and all things like exhaust and cat removal was easy. a standard engine hoist lifted it clear and I did not even have to remove the bonnet.
It will take 2 people for the remove and refit. and do not forget to support the gearbox when pulling engine out.

I would not do it on manual gearbox though as trying to line up the input shaft would not be easy.

I'd go for engine+gearbox out together.

Most scrappies lift out the engine and 'box together.

If you separate the gearbox and engine personally I'd remove the gearbox first and then put it back on last rather than try to get the engine aligned with a gearbox that's in-situ.

Removing the gearbox on it's own is pretty straight forward access is pretty good.

I have never removed a miggy engine, but on other cars I have found it easier to lift the engine out separately from the gear box.  :y  It does however depend on what you intend to do on the engine / gear box;  from just clutch replacement, crank shaft / piston  removal to complete overhaul / replacement.

If you have a professional high level lift of course then you can drop the engine and box out together from underneath as I recently watched a specialist Vx scrapper do recently. :y  That would be the easiest option, but for many of us that is not an option. :'(

Engine and box is easier, 2 person job, need a good hoist.

Thanks for all the advice. I removed both engine and gearbox together this afternoon. I did it by myself but then I do have both a pit and a good engine crane. Ironically the things that gave me most grief were the electrical connectors. They all seem to require a different method of undoing them!
