2.5TD FAULT
« on: 19 June 2008, 21:38:29 »

Removed my thermostat to see if this eliminated same due to rather hot running. (Rad and water pump changed already).
On road testing, the temp rose no further than 90. Also, the glow-plug light came on at each start-up, presumably because the engine temp is lower, due to there (temporarily), being no 'stat fitted.
However, homeward-bound and descending a hill, the engine cut-out on me, and took some considerable cranking to restart. It'll now restart, EML is permanently on, and no glow-plug light showing.
Any ideas fellas? Really brassed off now!

The stat is a real red herring (its not unusual for people to miss undertsand what the real purpose of a stat is!), if the engine is getting to hot then its down to the rads ability to cool the hot water, the stat is simply there to get the engine to temp faster by stopping flow through the rad until the engine is hot enough!

As for the current fault, have you checked the fuses etc?

Got in this morning - guess what, glow-plug light came on, and engine fired-up okay. EML also went out - strange?

It would be interesting to know what fault code was stored but, this requires Tech 2 or a similar diag tool.

Thanks Mark,
I've previously had code 64 diagnosed - injection pump ....... !
I've recently noticed that the warm starting problem is getting worse.
All this points to shelling-out mega bucks for a pump change. This could also point to the slow rev build-up that I'm also experiencing.
I'd be happy to fork out if my probs were cured, as the missus adores the tractor .... ! What d'ya think?

I would be checking the lift pump pipe in the tank and running some cleaner through it first..... :y

Start with the cheap (mostly free) and easy stuff first

Already done .......
Complete in-tank pump unit removed and clinically cleaned tank also.
Fuel filter changed and filled with Forte - problems previously outlined persist. What d'ya think now?

Ideally need to see current codes stored to see what the problem was.

Is your TD paperclippable (a few are)?

Mileage is 142000.
Everyone tells me that at this mileage the injection pump is usually pretty well worn out.
Diagnostics confirm the dreaded code 64 - fuel quantity out of range.

I disagree, there are plenty of omegas out there with well over 200,000 on the clock still going strong!! fuel quantity is governed by the peitzo lead injector, would be trying one of them if you have done the diesel magic trick a couple of times?

142k isnt to bad if its a hot start priblem I would have a look at the injectors its possible there is a big carbon build up.
a code 64 will not be specfic to the pump so try the easy way out pop out a couple and check them out I think you will be surprised what you find.

I poured cold water over the injection pump - engine fired-up straight away.

You say fuel temp sensor is at fault ......
Is this within the injection pump?
