Viscous fan/Shocks/Discs
« on: 23 June 2008, 14:10:38 »

Just got Traktor back from a service
Apparently the blades on the Viscous Van are cracked & breaking up
Has anyone else ever seen this before?
Where can I get a replacement?
Also seems I have a leak in a rear shock absorber & willneed new front discs by the time the pads need replacing
Are Gas-filled shocks as good or better than standard?
Are pattern discs OK?

I would take the whole viscous fan off and bin it, TBH. In our climate a couple of electric fans should be more than enough to keep it cool, and it'll be quieter and (very slightly) more efficient without it anyway.

Unfortunately without the viscous it is inclined to overheat despite changing the pump & thermostat & flushing the Radiator
I agree it is quieter without it, but was put back on because of the temperature problem. I carry very heavy PA gear around which is why a rar shocker may have started leaking, on long inclines at 70mph in the summer it gets near 100 celcius
Any suggestions on shocks & discs as you are probably the nearest member to me?

OK. I believe Jaime has been running without his with no issues but as you say, maybe a good idea when heavily loaded.

Brake stuff - Genuine VX is reckoned to be the best bet. Never had the need for any shocks, etc.

I have an ABS trade club card BTW, if you need it. It's been accepted at the VX garage in Aldershot with a bit of grumbling. Never tried it in Basingstoke.

The Omega had gas shocks as standard.

The Vx ones on tarde club are reasonably priced or the KYB ones from here are pretty good to:

Police in Alton are no problem. They leave the bypass free for Overfinch to test their Range Rovers - and me to embarrass them. [smiley=evil.gif]

I fitted new self levellers 64 each TC. My viscous doesn't work & I have probs on inclines too. Tried running electric fans full time but makes little diff. Luckily weather is shite.

I run without my viscous, have for around a year, no issues whatsoever, and I may hazard a guess mine gets driven a bit harder ::)

I'd say you may well have an issue with cooling still.  If you've tried everything else, the thing that actually cured my overheating issue (sadly not before head damage) was a very strong oil flush.

I have a spare viscous or 3 here, though I suspect the viscous part fubar. You're welcome to the blades if you're passing

That's interesting as one of mine is leaking fluid!
Did every Omega have gas shocks, even old '96 TD estates?

Rear shocks - I've replaced mine with a pair of Monroe Ride Levellers, and fitted assisters into the coils at the same time.
It's the second such 'conversion' that I've done - highly recommended, especially as you frequently run loaded. (I tow a caravan with my tractor!).
If you're interested, let me know - I'll dig out the suppliers, who give first-class overnight delivery via mail order).
