Rear coil spring and front Steering Idler arm...
« on: 23 June 2008, 20:28:32 »

Hi folks

My miggy just failed its MOT  :-[, er nowt serious thankfully.
Its the small front Idler arm and the offside rear coil spring.

Just a quick query to you knowledgeable chaps, are they DIY'able things, and at a rough guess any ideas how much these two bits cost?

Gotta phone VX in the morning, just wondered if anyone knew off the top of their heads!

thanks in advance,

john

i just lowered my mig and the rear springs r easy. just drop the back shock at the wishbone and take off the bolt that holds the antiroll bar. This allowes u to be able to remove the spring with a nail bar r something like that.

rear springs £44 each, replace in pairs, about 1/2 hours for your average joe to replace.

That only works putting smaller springs in, putting standard ones back in that way is nearly impossible.

Best way is to lower the diff

Yup you can, but not everyone wants to lower the car.

If you want to just replace the springs with standard ones, lower the diff.

Get KYB which are the OEM supplier.

not done it either myself, price sounds about right, remember it was fairly cheap.

Easy DIY too  :)

To do the springs invest in a decent set of spring assisters... They aren't expensive, or essential, but will make the whole job much easier!!! You can also use them for many other tasks, like making front wishbones easier as I am led to believe!!! ::) ::) :y :y

The idler, I've not done one but I believe it's a doddle and that price seems pretty good!

The idler is straightforward - there is a trick to removal described in the maintenance guide on here.  I think I paid 30 quid for mine.

Both the rear springs and idler arm have maintenance guides to give details on how to fit. Dont go prising the trailing arms to change the springs or you risk damaging the rear subframe bushes and flexi brake hoses.

The KYB rear springs are good but, watch for the pattern idlers as they dont last......there are some good ones on ebay for about 35 quid delivered.
