alternator going i think
« on: 24 June 2008, 22:49:03 »

i put a new crankshaft sensor on today, but tonight i have noticed the battery light glowing slightly (very barely), but if i turn lights off or air con off it goes out,
i reckon its the alternator but does anyone think by any remote chance its linked to the crankshaft sensor

I doubt the two are linked ...

Check that neither battery terminal is getting warm, corrosion/bad connections can cause this problem. If you have a multimeter check for battery voltage with engine stopped about 12.6v, with engine running about 14.4 v

Disconnect the + terminal and give it and the battery terminal a damned good clean, check that the crimped lead is firmly in the socket. I think that you have found the problem .. there should be NO rise in temperature at all ... you have a bad connection.

I agree 100% with Entwood..

It will be either a high resistance in the + cable, OR an old/weak battery that's not holding a good charge :y

Normally the connection where the big wire from the starter / alternator is crimped into the battery terminal works loose. Best option, if the wire is not mullered, is to get a new battery terminal with screw clamps for the wire and replace it.
