noisy engine
« on: 25 June 2008, 13:45:41 »

when i first got my car about 2.5 years ago it was very quiet.
but sometime last year got a little rattelly, at first i assumed tappets, but im told they are self adjusting so should not rattle. i asked mechanic and he said that it wasnt a problem, maybe loose rocker box cover. i have had the cover replaced as wrong one installed but still rattly. its no louder than when first started but i would like it quiter any ideas? :o

Sorry to jump in here, but I have a similar thing. Mine sounds more like a cam than a tappet (deeper note) but it seems to calm down when the car has warmed. My car has 154,000 on the clock so I assumed it should be expected.
Like you though, I did not notice it when I bought mine and that was only 2 months ago?

Must have been blinded by the smooth drive after my Roaver 800 eh?

Thanks
Mike

so the oil has been replaced twice in 2.5 years?

Give it some more changes. I change mine every 3 months, costs £10 in total DIY for GM oil and oil filter.

Using BP fuel and loads of fresh oil has made my 2.2 a lot quieter than before.

i think you need to do a few oil changes m8 using correct oil most would recommend every 3000mls if only used for town driving and 5000 for motorway

Your exhaust manifold is where the engine connects to the exhaust.  You could give it an inspection.  Is the exhaust a little noisy when revved at the engine end?
