Air Con Woes

Not sure if the aircon on my 2.6 CD is working properly or not. (not used to cars with working air con)

When I try to cool the interior, the blowers seem to be on for an incredibly long time. Not only this but the air that comes out is tepid, and extremely noisy in operation. So much so that I usually turn it off and just do without the air con.

Is this normal or does it need what they call a re-gas?

What is a re-gas?

Air con works on the same principle as a fridge /freezer when on the air coming out of vents should be icy cold if not find a garage or air con specialist & get the system regassed also ask them to check for leaks when they refill the system, they should also add a certain amount of lubricant at the same time

A re-gas is when you get your Air Con filled with the gass it requires to re fill it..
Without Air Con switched on the idle revs should be 500 rpm, with the air con on the revs lift slightly to around 600 rpm.....
Also look at your air con pump when the car is running and the front should be moving very slowly when the air con is off. Then switch on th air con take another look at the pump it should now be spinning... if not maybe does need re-gassing which cost me around £60 :y

Silly question but can you tell me where the aircon pump is please

Open the bonnet standing at the front of the car. You will be able to see the Auxilary Belt that turns when the engine is running, at the bottom right there is a pump with a clutch on the front That is it mate

The item marked G was another idler pulley .. not used on most engines  :)

Have a look at this thread I recently started about the guy who did my re-gas.  He did a great job and VERY reasonably priced, albeit a little far away from you maybe.
