Kill or Cure (Emmissions)
« on: 03 July 2008, 00:43:32 »

I've just fitted a new O2 sensor to my new exhaust and fitted them to new O2 sensor bosses which are behind the main cat.

Long story, but those of you with 3.2 l cars will know about this.

It is the 2nd sensors that are normally there to measure the pre-cats, but when the pre-cats get tired you get an incessant EML light warning with a code 0420 (RH) or 0430 (LH). A prescribed solution is to move the secondary sensors to behind the main cats and thereby "fool" the system into thinking that the pre-cats are working well, when in fact both cats are cleaning the exhaust before it gets as far as the now repositioned sensors.

The problem is that until I parked up tonight the EML light was on. I left he car for a good few hours to cool down and then fitted a new sensor into the new boss further back and then disconnected my old sensor that is further forward.

Instantly the EML light dissapeared when I next ran the car. Great I thought, until I realised that the EML light doesn't even come on now, not even whilst I turn the ignition barrel round to the point where all the warning ights come on momentarily.

What is wrong? Has the EML bulb miraculously blown as I changed the sensor? Is there a fuse problem? Is that EML light even supposed to come on when you turn on the ignition?

Bulb's probably just died from being on so long.  I wouldn't worry about it - just change the bulb.

Bit too much of a coincidence in my book that. I'm not dismantling the rather' dash just yet. If it is that I am so pisshed off as I've been waiting weeks to actually "fix" it.

Taking the dash out is rather a pain in the arse but I had the same problem when I did an engine swap.  Light worked before but not after.  I swapped the fog light warning bulb to see if it worked and it's been working ever since.

The ECU light should come on and then go off when starting the car, the emissions light should not.

Sounds like the bulb to me. Will be interesting to see how you get on.

Incidentally, if you leave a sensor in the exhaust without the heater connected it'll die due to carbon buildup not being burnt off by the heater. If you envisage ever using the old sensors again I'd replace them with a sump plug or similar.

Aah, that sounds like it is a "cure" then. Is there any way (without a TechII) to see if the EML (the one with the picture of the engine) is still working bulbwise?

Must admit coming from MarksDTM I am starting to feel a bit more optimistic now. :y

The emissions lamp illuminates on mine when you turn the key to position II before starting and goes out when starting. Have just cleared the codes to make sure there is nothing held and it still does the same.

What is the deal here then? Is MarksDTM mislead? Should I be dismantling the dash?

I'm still betting on dash off, replace the bulb!

According to P26 and P150 of my owners manual (October 2002 TS 1433-5) it states that the emissions lamp should perform exactly as I described mine does.

Maybe this only relates to our 3.2 / 2.6 cars?  :-/

Anyhow, my money is on the bulb being blown on yours....

I had the dash out last weekend for the first time to change all of the clock bulbs and it was quite an easy job, nothing to difficult  :y

Don't know the  answer to your car problem, but could you kill or cure that damned bug of yours Albatross? :P   I am still continually trying to swip it off my screen, scratching it, breaking nails, smashing glass, and now going completely mad! ;D ;D ;D ;)

Have you checked it for codes? Have a look and see if the cat efficiency codes are still being thrown and while you're at it check to see if it's complaining about an open circuit indicator lamp.

I must admit I thought mine came on with ignition and then extinguished when engine started.

Just been out and checked mine ... 3.2 Facelift ... :)

Both emissions (picture of engine) and EML (car with spanner) lights illuminate when switched on but not started, and extinguish immediately the engine is started.
