Tech II Locations in the south
« on: 06 July 2008, 11:02:17 »

Are there any forum members South of London who have a Tech II as the only one's I can find are all up north and my work means weekdays are a no no and therefore weekends are a bit of a luxury.

If not can anybody reccomend a garage with said equipment and not too ridiculous a price?

Well as you seem to be the man on here with all the knowledge it looks like I might have to find time to venture North.
From what I've read things like the Cruise activation and firmware updates can only be done from a Tech2. So unless I win the lottery anytime soon I think I'll be booking a session with your good self or Marks DTM Calib :)

Ah, yes, for that you do need the real Tech2. And ideally, someone who knows how to use it properly.

What is the "real" Tech2? It's all very confusing, if you could explain it would be very helpful, thanks.

The real Tech II is the proper diagnostic tool that Vauxhall would use to talk to the car, ie a progression on the Tech 1 that you'd use to talk to a Carlton or Senator.
When people talk about a 'Cheapo TechII' they're talking about a £20/30 tool that you can buy from the likes of eBay that you use via a laptop. These are limited to reading engine codes & maybe resetting an air light.

How does one get hold of a real Tech 2? Do they come up on eBay?

Come up very occasionally on ebay.  Expect to pay around £1500 - £2000 for a second hand one, plus you need a valid subscription to TIS 2000, can get for around £600 a year if you shop around.

Thomasba, try these guys if you are in the area.  They quoted me £35-00 to activate the cruise on my 2.6 FBW.  They did a firmware upgrade to start and then activated it, but refused to believe that they had and didn't charge me at all even though I offered!.  The cruise does work now incidentally, and I have told them, but they still insist that it can't as I don't have 'enough parts to make it work' Anyway they are nice people and not too expensive.  They are in Oxfordshire just off the A40 in Witney.

LOL, just shows they don't know what there are doing ;D, hence why I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Thanks for the link PMitchell, I've been reluctant to take my car to a garage to have work done ever since I started driving (1976) becasue of a deep seated mistrust that the mechanics either don't know what they're doing or they say they've done it when they haven't. So I've always done the work myself or got a friend to do it. Whilst the guys you went toi were good enough not to charge it does make you wonder....

Looks like a trip to TheBoy may be on the cards after all.....get the kettle on! :y
