Erratic idle
« on: 10 July 2008, 09:38:29 »

Just wanted to put my mind at rest and also to justify the work onvolved in doing the stat replacement.
When I start car in morning/or from cold tick over is fairly erratic and uneven and does not level out until driven about 5 miles.Assume auto-choke is operated by water temp and as stat is stuck open ?this is the problem.
Have recently changed plugs/leads and you could "eat your dinner" off the breathers,so hoping its as a result of engine not warming up quick enough.

It will be in the warm up cycle for a much longer time given the stat is open...

So revs would be higher as choke is on for longer ?,but after short time revs go from 1100 ish on choke back to 600/650 with a/c on.Need to investigate further.

There is no choke on an injected engine - petrol or diesel !! - The ECU that controls the injectors simply holds them open a fraction longer to give slightly more fuel, it gets its signal from a seperate water temperature sensor to the one that runs the temp gauge.

Possibilities - Stat stuck open  - start engine from cold and stand with one hand on the top hose....  should stay cold until a quick "burst" of heat as the stat opens, then cool, then open etc etc until fully open is constant heat. If the temp very slowly rises continually then the stat is stuck open.

Faulty temp sender - not sending a "correct" temp feed to the ECU until well warm .. replace sender as the only way to check this would be "live" readings using a Tech2 AFAIK
