vibration above 65mph
« on: 15 July 2008, 03:04:44 »

I'm getting vibration similar to what would be felt if the front wheels needed balancing. It starts at around 65mph and increases significantly from there on and becomes more of a judder above 80mph. (er...on private roads, of course !)

The balancing of the front were checked recently, so it's not them. I'm gonna fit new rear tyres later today so I may as well get the balancing checked all round. I'll check the bearings whilst I'm at it.
I changed the shocks and springs all round last week and had a full geometric yesterday.
If it's not the balancing of the rears, what else can it be ?  :-/

I would be tempted to get the front wheels rechecked, when you have the new rears done then swap the backs to fronts for a run down the motorway.

There is allways a chance the wheel balancing was incorrect, very rare but it happens.

Have you fitted new disks recently, if there was any dirt on the hub when refitting it could cause a slight off balance thats magnify's with speed.

Other things to check for are damage to the tyre sidewalls, can happen ay time.    Wheel bearngs track rod ends, suspention bushes etc. :y

I had the same problem with mine recently, after I had new tyres fitted.  Took it back to the garage to get them to re-check the balancing and it was way out!  It turned out they never balanced them at all!  Once that was done all was fine. Last time I am going back there that's for sure.

It could be a bent alloy, probably on the rear. IIRC vibration over 60ish means the problem is coming from the rear.

For wheel balancing see if you can find a garage that has a 5 stud mount on the balancer rather than the centre mount. You'll get a much more accurate balance. WHile the wheel is on the machine ask them to see if its out of shape.

Of course it could be your front wishbones on the way out or ohh any number of other things. But try the wheel balance first.

Yep. 5 point balance sorted my 70 to 80 wobble, did the fronts only and the s wheel left to right wobble has gone. I now have a wobble that makes the s wheel judder up and down, i hope doing the rears will cure that . Cone balance nowhere near accurate enough. BUT, my omega has a bad wishbone i have discovered recently,  and this causes random
Wobbles at any speed usually caused by uneven rd surface. Hope helps.

omega's are common for this, even if your 100% sure its coming from the front, don't be fooled!! get the rears chacked matey

problem after 60 means you need a really good shop for re-balance all four..Also there are new type equipments that measure vertical irregularities on tires..

Thanks for the input. It was the rear tyres, they were well shot. Strange tho, cos the vibration appeared a few months back and the tyres had only done a couple of hundred miles when it started. Maybe I lost a balancing weight.
Anyway, changed the tyres and double checked the balancing. Vibration gone.

It IIRC vibration over 60ish means the problem is coming from the rear.
.
Wrong

Glad you got it sorted mate, unfortunately finer problems are noticed at higher speeds when the tolerances are more important. It just needs a fitter with more patience and attention to balance the wheel more accurately.

I found that on my omega last year. No vibration felt through the steering wheel but more something felt in the seat. Swaped front to rear to isolate vibration and it came in at a much lower speed through the steering wheel.

Got wheels checked and 1 wheel has lost a weight, had not noticed it as not much 50+ speeds done over here. Had them balanced and problem dissappeared.
