Possible head gasket gone??
« on: 18 July 2008, 19:04:13 »

I think i have got a problem with my mv6.
I have owned the car about 4 weeks, hasn't been driven as its got no t & t.
I checked the oil on day of purchase, cap and dip, both were clear and fine, looks like it had an oil change in the previous months.
Replaced a few bits today, and thought, i know, i'll top up the water and check the oil before the trip to the garage.
Water is fine, oil is fine, but when i lifted the oil cap, i almost fell over with shock!!!
There was quite a bit of mayo.
I've cleaned all the mayo from the top of the oil filler and everything seems fine.
There's no oil in the water, it isn't going down, the car isn't getting hot, and the oil on the dip stick is perfectly clear.
My question is, is this right??
I currently drive a v6 vectra until the miggy is on the road, and i've never had any problem with that.
I have noticed on a couple of pages on here, about mayo building up from short journeys?
I have started the car a few times since buying it, would that be the problem?
Any answers would be appreciated.

My car builds up quite a bit of mayo on top but it is nothing to worry about. Shocked me when i first saw it but with no loss of water or oil mixing it is not a problem. ;)

It does not happen on the Vectra because the oil cap is in the cam cover so gets cleaned by the cam wash....becasue its an extended tube on the Omega the moisture gathers and you get the mayo

Usual V6 symptoms of short journeys, exagerated on the Omega with the extended oil filler neck that the oil mist cools on. Not a problem.

Edit: LOL, beaten by Mark!

Be careful though, this mayo can cause your breathers to block and can cause premature cam cover gasket failure.
Just clean your breathers to be on the safe side.

I have it too, as pointed out to meet on Reading meet No.2 last weekend. A combination of driving 3 miles to work and back every day and driving for fuel economy :)
