header tank filler cap
« on: 20 July 2008, 15:16:06 »

hi all, urgent problem! help required!

i recently got a new header tank filler cap, 90467473, as the rubber ring on the inside of the old one split in the week when i was doing a coolant flush.

anyway, flushing again today and guess what... the new cap won't go on properly. went on ok first couple of times, but now the rubber seems to be facing 'inwards', although not split.

i guess im looking at a new header tank if the thread is knackered or something.

anyway, the question i have is as follows... i need to get this cap back on, which shouldnt be a problem in its original state, but i cant seem to work out whats up with the rubber ring. how far down should it go? should it be touching the top of the lid from the inside and wrapped around the black plastic valve? the one i am looking at right now sits on top of the black plastic valve pointing inwards (kinda flattened i guess) so the header tank isnt able to screw down properly.

as ever, your help appreciated.

The rubber ring also holds the pressure release valve in place.  it clips in just past last thread

I am sure when you look at the underside of the reservoir cap all the rubber is supposed to be flat as close to the top of the cap as possible. So when you screw the cap onto the threaded Reservoir the rubber inside the cap makes a seal with the reservoir...

so it sits on top of the valve, just holding it place? it doesnt go 'around' it so that the edge of the valve is half way up the inside of the ring?

Just sits on top of the edge of the valve, holding in place.  Seal is created on the top edge of the tanks thread, as it compresses between tank and the valve flat

ok well i pushed the ring in, screwed it on the header tank but it didnt go easy, almost like the ring was being squashed into place. previously its just screwed on no worries.

guess i'll have to go for a spin and see if we start p1ssing coolant out of the tank...  :-/

drove 10 miles down the road, water was leaking out of the filler neck. waited for it to cool, repositioned the rubber and put back on, all seems ok now but the rubber ring had split a bit. going to order a new header tank tomorrow. will have to get another new filler cap while im at it. ran to motorist centre to grab emergency cap when i stopped in town but when i got back to the car they'd given me one that was waaay too small hehe which forced me to try and repair the leaking one. must be something wrong with header tank thread that's all i can think, its looking a bit worse for wear anyway.

out of interest anyone got a part number or know how much they are w/trade card?

If you're throwing away the old header tank, and assuming it has a level sensor, let me know how much you want for it.... ;)
