You've not said what car you've got, with that information the guy's on here can be more precise in what they tell you.

On my Omega 2.2CDI the water pump is driven by the belt and should be changed at the same time. I've just bought the bit's to do it my self and it came to £98

My concern is that at least if a Vauxhall Dealer does it....and they f**k it up...or the belt snaps a few months later....I've got more comeback than if I get some local garage to do it or try and sort it myself

I had a belt snap on my other car...it cost me £500 to have repaired...and that was a diesel Ford Fiesta!!!

The thick end of £500 is a fair amount of money....but its only something that needs doing every 4 years or so with the amount of miles I do in the car

I know what you are saying but as TheBoy said earlier if they think it's a difficult job and they are a main dealer I'd be worried about taking it to them.

I also thought main dealers had fixed prices for doing this kind of work. If the parts are approx £100 and they charge £100 per hour then they are either very slow or they're not quoting you properly.

Has anyone thought of sending the dealer a copy of the DVD.  Seriously, they really must be joking!

I've got a cam locking kit and the rest of the kit you need to change the belt.  If you want to make it over to Coventry, you're welcome to change it on my drive.  Get a Contitech or Gates kit - that should have alignment marks as well but really they are not needed with the locking kit

But I thought the marks were to aid the initial fitting of the belt, rather than timing (which is based on the cam marks and the corresponding marks on the guage) so I am not clear about the comment 'really they are not needed with the locking kit'  :-/ (then again I have only done one before..)

you're right, the timing marks are to fit the belt.  once fitted, the rest is done by the engine, which you should have locked to TDC with the locking kit anyway - which is what it's at when you register the timing marks before removal.

I was told that there were three different belts availiable for my engine - what is the difference between them, and if I see one on fleabay how will I know if it's right?

sorry I was not clear.  with the locking kit, you do not need alignment marks on the belt because using the locking kit you almost certainly cannot get the belt a tooth out (actually you can but you can spot that because you will not be able to get the cam timing spot on).  My guess is that this is why VX deleted the markings

The dealer said its not always necessary to have it done as the cambelt doesnt run the waterpump so they are going to see what its like when the front is off and maybe not do it

He said its an expensive job because it takes hours and the new VX belts dont come with timing marks and its a bit of a nightmare to get the timing right.

Does this sound right?

whooah. i'm not one to attempt a cambelt change, especially a v6 one, but i took mine to an independent vauxhall specialist who deal with v6's as their bread and butter, i bought the cambelt kit and water pump myself from vauxhall and they charged me 150 quid all in to change it for me. i was pretty pleased with this, and feedback has suggested that unless doing it yourself 150 quid is a fair amount to pay.

seriously, walk away from the 500 quid charge and the apparent inexperience and hunt out an independent who work regularly on the v6's, or an experienced garage.

too right!  I paid a dealer 4 years ago and in truth they did a good job BUT the V6 belt is not complex if you have the right tools and the DVD.  In face it is much easier than a 4 pot veccy for instance, at least with the air intakes off you can actually get your hands on the belt.  My V6 was the first belt I ever changed and yes I hit a few snags but there is nothing that you cannot sort out with a bit of common sense and a mug of tea!  Even easier if you have someone experienced to give you a hand if you get stuck

iirc, on trade card genuine gm water pump and cambelt kit combined dont come to much more than 110 quid. there isnt a huge discount on these parts either so buying them without the trade card shouldnt set you back much more. then, should you decide not to attempt it yourself, add 150 for fitting and youre going to get it done for well under 300...

Suggest belt & pump from Vauxparts and hire locking kit as well from them about 60-75 pounds their on net Wakefield or Barnsley.I got mine at Greenhouses with trade card still about 100 pounds and tensioner was knackered but they wouldnt change it unless I paid them to fit it after I already fitted  it?
