auto not changing gear sometimes
« on: 22 July 2008, 21:29:42 »

hi, i have just bought a 2000 2.6v6 cdx AUTO estate and have a couple of questions/problems.  I bought it fairly cheap and it doesn't seem to change gear when pushing on.  not driven it far but it seems okay if driven slowly.  it also feels very slow....Looking at it I think it needs a good service and I plan to change oil (engine and gearbox) and clean out the breather system but any advice on the above problems.  no errors light on the dash or on the computer.

First thing to check ... do  both the EML lights  ... 1 car with a spanner through the roof .. and .. 2. picture of an engine come on when you turn the ignition on without starting the engine, and go out after about 2-3 seconds ??

It is not unknown for some folks to remove these bulbs so the unwitting buyer does not know about faults.

Have a check and post back. If the lighhts don't both work there is a how-to on replacing the bulbs...

Sounds about right to me.  :-/ If you drive with your foot burried into the carpet it will hang on to the gears longer than if you gently accelerate. Using 'sport' will empasise the late change, ie it will hang on to lower gears for even longer.

the spanner through the roof doesn't light up at all but the engine light does come on and goes out again.  are you sure both lights are suppose to turn on?

That means the main EML (Engine Management Light) is NOT working .. it could well be trying to tell you something !!! ( the other one is the emissions control light)

Personally the first thing I would do is to fix that bulb !!

The 2.6 can't have the "paperclip" test done .. but on some you can read the codes by pressing both the brake and accelerator pedals fully down, then switching the ignition on without starting the engine .. the EML will flash a number of times to give the failure codes.

Of course, this can only be done if the EML light works !!! So, replace and test  :)

When cold the gearbox does struggle to change. This is to allow the cats to warm up and protect them. After a while it should run smoothly, if not you have a problem

I can do this but can anyone confirm that both EML lights should be lit up?  On the clip to demonstrate the paperclip test I don't think both lit up do they?  Also, looking in the owners manual it says depending on model.  If would be great if someone could confirm for me.

They both light momentarily on switch on, and go out in about 2-3 seconds. This is a bulb check sequence, or you'd never know if the bulbs are blown (removed).

mileage reads 81k but i suspect it has done more.  I get no errors on the computer indicating gearbox problem.  I think I will clean everything out and change gearbox fluid.  Any other suggestions?

Yep, My 2.5 only ever had one light, same as my current 3.0. That second light is (IIRC) only for 2.6 and 3.2 versions.
