Is this also the one to use as 'belt and braces' on the stat?

I did use it on the oil cooler and also the stat housing last time i used it. And that particular car is absolutley fine in that respect - over a year later.

However ive been wrong on this thread about using it on cam covers  :-X so.... ;D

That's a little worrying as I've just done my camcover (4pot) I bought all the bits from VX dealer and it was the grey stuff they gave me :o

Should I be worried?

The sealant Markie has, is in a tube a bit like a small bathroom sealant tube that fits in a gun and is light grey. The sealant for the cam covers is in a squeezable tube like toothpaste and is gark grey.

The sealent they gave me was in a mastic gun tube and that is what I used on the camcover gasket.....so is this likely to be a problem?

I would think so, the sealant they gave you is for metal to metal.

Are you saying then that with the camcover being plastic I should take it off and get some new sealent and then refit.

Sorry to sound thick on this :-[

I think its a common misconception by VX parts departments to supply grey for cam covers when it should be black. To save doing them again I would keep a close eye open for leaks and keep your fingers crossed. At the first sign of trouble re-do them using black

Simple rule for sealants:

Metal - metal machined surfaces : use green tube (eg cam bearing cap to head, oil pump to block)

Metal - metal gap filling : use grey cartridge (eg oil cooler plate, tin to alloy sump, thermostat if corrosion found)

Plastic to metal and flexible joints : use black tube ( eg cam cover)
