pitfalls with 2001 3.0 elite auto?
« on: 25 July 2008, 10:20:07 »

off to look at/buy a 3.0ltr elite saloon - is there anything i should look out for particularly?

83k miles, in (i think) "old man" burgundy :(

apart from the horrible colour what would make you walk away?

check for cambelt. should have been done 3k ago, and make sure that the tensioners were done at the same time, if not factor about 350 to 400 to get the job done.

service history, does it have any, check the header tank for evidence of any oil.
try and make sure the car is cold when you first start it up, listen for any  noise and check the exhausts

aside from that it is pretty much typical Omega stuff

Also pull a spark plug lead out and look to see if there is any oil down there... it aint an expensive job to do yourself but around £150 at the dealers so these things can help you reduce the price maybe :y

I would seriously look at Danny's car ....... very minor issues on the LPG --- but it's got everything you are after PLUS LPG. It's had a lot done to it to make it top notch

Good one - just about optimum :y
...until they change things retrospectively again >:( :'(

I'd check the tyres (300 quid upwards if they need doing soon), bodywork etc.   Any warning lights coming on.   Check running temp is around the middle of the guage - lower not a big problem , but higher may be.   AC blowing cold.  Check it has both radio  and cd changer codes.  and the stuff others mentioned.

Switch ignition on without starting engine .. check EML light comes on for 2-3 secs and goes out.

If it does NOT come on then someone is hiding something that could be nasty ...  :( - at which point I'd be walking ...

Old man burgundy might be 'Rubens Red', which I really like! Looks nice and classy when clean  :)

Check it's got both keys, new one around £60-80. Condition of exhaust etc.

OK - bought the car  :o

mechanically appears to be A1 - recent service, receipts, etc

on the plus side:

MOT'd til July  :y
6 months tax
3 month warranty for mechanical breakdown up to £1000
the "old man burgundy" turns out to be a weird mauve/brown/dark gold colour - maybe you'll know it better than me - the wife likes it - its growing on me :)
good tyres
great run up the M90 home from Edinburgh - smooth, fast, quiet, fast, did I say fast?

on the downside:-

AC doesnt seem to blow very cold (I weighed it up against the rest of the car and fingers crossed it just needs charged  :-/)
rear sun screen makes a clicking noise - but nothing happens!!(not too worried as I've never had one in anything else - so thats no prob)
err thats it I think.....oh - sat nav inactive and pushing all the buttons randomly doesnt seem to work - theres a CD in the car that it doesnt like - I'll read up on it

so thats that - I'm happy £1650 with my '96 2.0 GLS as trade-in

 :y

So your next stop is getting a trade card, cost of £20 through " various other forums" and it will pay for itself when you change brakes  :y

Good to see another Jock too  :)
