Just in need of some help regarding my old mans omega, i think this is the right section to post this if not mod please move.

The last week or so its been playing up not always starting first time etc, he got a new battery on it yesterday as it hadnt been changed in the 5 years hes had it. Still having the problem though, had the aa out twice today and both times they've not been any help. We have managed to get it started about 6 times today, but 3 times its been up to an hour before we can get it moving. Spoke to a few different people and have a simple knowledge of cars myself so i have a few 'guesses' if what could be causing the problem but i really dont know enough to actually find out the problem.

The things we have come up with are, fuel pump, not sure if its bust or what, maybe the pipes need blasting no idea. The AFR was brought up, personally i dont think it could be this but someone said they think the mixture is a bit rich, well i would imagine once its just been started it would be as we are having to floor the gas in a last attempt to get more petrol to the engine. Another idea we had was maybe spark plugs, hes got the 2.6 v6 model and when we got it started the last time i was revving it to about 7000 rpm and at very high revs theres a very low pitched hollow sounding bang, but not not like a back fire, dont know where its coming from, checked the exhaust but looking at it everything seems alright on it, not that id know where to look, but maybe something is miss fireing? Someone else said that because the car is sometimes run low on petrol when apparently it shouldnt be that the fuel tank might have some 'flakes' on the inside and when filling up the tank it maybe block the pipe becuase of this, and lastly he has been filling up the car at a different petrol station to usual and wondering if its dirty fuel etc.

Sorry about the essay, any input would be very helpful.

Hi Geoff and welcome to the forum.

I would start by trying this

Foot on brake, gas pedal to the floor.
Turn on ignition fully without firing the engine,
when dash lights go out the yellow light car symbol
with a spanner through it should flash.
4 sets of flashes/numbers pause and so on.
10 flashes is zero.
Constant flashing no codes.

Post up the results

Hi, Geoffa51, and welcome to the forum.

Absolutely no point in guessing, it could be all or any of what
you said, plus plenty other things as well.

What you need to do is start at square one and get the codes
read to see if the ECU is reporting a fault.

As your's is a 2.6, I'm afraid you can't do the 'paperclip test.'
So you'll either have to buy/borrow a code reader or pay a
garage to read them.

There is a chance that the 'Pedal Test' will work on your's. Worth
a try as it won't cost you a penny to try.

Ok done the test, the flashing codes were:
10,3,3,5

Whats that mean?  :-?

Had a quick look on google for the codes, dont know if this is right but i think the light codes result in this:

Fuel pump relay
Coolant temperature sensor (voltage low & high respectively)
Knock control system

Is that right?

I'm sorry but I must disagree.... that code I believe is 0335 which is the crank sensor, and the faults described are typical of a crank sensor failure.
There are many threads discussing crank sensor failure, usually as a result of a code 19, but this is from the paperclip test on the V6 2.5 engine

the 2.6 and 3.2 engines have a different ECU and the codes are 4 digit ones..

My research has given me this list .. I don't however know its accuracy ..

Crank sensor is easy to change .. thereare instructions in the maintenance guide... again for the 2.5 but I beleieve its the same for the 2.6 .. it certainly is for the 3.2  

about 30 minutes work ... but the problem is getting the right one ..

0335 = Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction.

(10 flashes =  "0").

Crank sensor duff (or possibly wiring..)...common occurence

Oh right, thanks guys will read up on them threads now, i will probably find out when reading the threads but how hard is it to replace and is it expensive?

Forgot to add...apparently you get a few "warning" starts before they finally fail.  By the sounds of it, you've had your "3 strikes"..

Yea he deffinatly got his warning starts, luckily it just about managed to get him home, just spoke to someone who used to work for renault and she said to ask if the crank sensor is also called a Top Dead Centre (TDC) which (basicly) is the sensor that tells the engine where it is or something, and if it cant it just keeps firing but wont actually turn over? As a result to them gettings too hot and erroding (read something similar to problems with heat somewhere else on here)

Pretty much - but also works with a cam sensor (which also fail..).  Heat doesn't help their lifespan, granted.  You might get one last start first thing in the morning if you're very lucky - but I think its gone..

When the crank (or cam) sensor goes on a V6, it won't fire.  The ECU uses them both to determine if the engine is turning.  If it doesn't get these signals, then it won't run the fuel pump (hence your no-fuel scenario), plus you'll get no spark.

With Vauxhalls, crank and cam sensors are a way of life..

If it was a 2.0 16v, it would still run on one sensor...just the EML light would be on!
