Another daft question I'm afraid
« on: 24 July 2008, 21:13:55 »

Hello all,

A bit of a daft question regarding replacing the front wishbones and drop links.  I've read the How-To's and it all seems pretty straightforward but there have been some references to tightening up the fixings to the correct torque setting - which I didn't see stated.  So if anyone knows them could they help out?

I feel a bit mean and stingy asking to be honest.  I did try and buy a Haynes manual but unfortunately both Halfords I visited had none in stock.  :(

Thanks muchly

not sure if they're on oof somewhere but Haynes says:

Anti-roll bar drop link = 65Nm

Wishbones pivot bolts
Stage 1 = 120 Nm
Stage 2 = Angle tighten 30deg
stage 3 = Angle tighten 15deg

balljoint to arm 35Nm
balljoint to knuckle - 100Nm

 :y

ps you're supposed to change the pivot bolts like all fasteners that are angle tightened but nobody does ;)

thanks very much for the info, I'm just finishing off the driver's side and tightening up everything now so this is very handy.

Also got the chance to do up the caliper bolts with some loctite seeing as I forgot to do this when I changed the discs!  ::)

Remmember !! don't torque the front wishbone bolts until the car is at ride height ie wheels on the ground.  ;) ;)

but if the wheels are on the ground, how do you goet to the wishbone bolts unless you have a ramp or a pit?

Ramps are probably the best bet, but I put some bricks under both wheels.

Well, took her for a test drive this afternoon and still got the rumbling sound, especially with a quarter of right lock on at around 20MPH.  So, next weekend I'll be changing the wheel bearing.  If the noise is still there then I will be completely clueless.
