Hi again...

My omega has broken. The thingie you lift to put the car into reverse on a manual is lifting but it isnt pulling anything up. I assume that this is a broken cable or chain or something similar to this.
The plastic that surrounds the lifter cracked a while ago and gradually it has been falling apart but i have never got around to dealing with this. Anyways it is all gone and just the rubber underneath is left. I have taken of the gaitor and cant find anyway of removing the knob or any way to find this cable.

Im writing on behalf of my dad who has taken the car to the garage as he needs it to get to work tonight, and not being able to reverse may make parking a tad more dificult than it usually is. He has taken it to a garage but i doubt they will be able to help...

Any help appreciated. Also through destructive use of a knife treying to find out what was wrong we will also be needing a new gear nob.

okie people problem solved...

the man at the garage used the very sophisitcated technigque.... of snapping a piece of plastic...

He broke the thing which requires the lift up.... so this omega has a special mod.... it can go into reverse without the trigger. Boy racers will be jelous :p

my old car didnt have a lifter thing in the first place though so i imagine its not a compulsory thing

Where's reverse on an Omega then? My diseasal Astra's reverse is next to 1st.

Most cars have/had something that you'd to do with the gear lever to engage reverse, eg lift gear lever, or push gear lever down.

Mine does not need the collar lifting to go into reverse

Ah! The last manual car I had before the 'shed' was my Manta B SR and that must've been getting on for 20 years ago when most car only had 4 manual gears.

try constant-mesh  or better known as crash gearboxes. nearly like an automatic as you only use clutch for stopping and starting. can make a really swift gearchange after a bit of experience matching revs.

The Monza manual box has nothing to prevent it going into reverse althought it's sprung fairly tightly. Interestingly the Monza box has synchro in reverse as you can put it into reverse while still travelling forward (slowly!!). My Vx Combo firms van won't go into reverse half the time while sitting still without a helluva crash
