Hi all sorry if this has been covered a hundred times, my internet connection here is work is temperemental at best and is failing fast so must move quickly.

Over the past 3 days my engine has cut out 4 times, all in 5th gear at reasonably low RPM (first time was at 80MPH ), and very suddenly - without warning at all really.

I am now very worried as 3 of the occasions it has cut out have been on the very busy, fast and twisty Cardiff Bay link-road and losing power, steering going heavy and brakes becoming less powerful are bad combo.

When it cuts, the engine is just below the middle of the gauge (which seems normal for mine), the revs drop to zero instantly while the speedo ticks down slowly. The alternator and oil pressure lights come on immediately (ignition still in the second position), and it takes a good 15 minutes before I can restart it. Before this, the engine will turn and turn but not fire. Last night it fired back up within 5 mins but died again instantly.

I thought it could be dodgy fuel from Tesco as I had the first problem just after adding a tenner of 95 RON, but having burnt that off and getting some optimax last night (just in case) it died again this morning so its not bad fuel.

When its restarted it runs absolutely perfectly, still getting the good MPG, still pulls strongly - all seems absolutely normal.

Would this indicate ignition or are there other things I should look for? Will be getting it on the tech2 over the weekend hopefully.... very worried indeed as its plain dangerous  

Anyone else had a similar thing? Any suggestions please?

crank sensor probably, do a paper clip test in maintenance section, if you see code 19 ignore all other codes until crank sensor changed. its by the oil filter.

yep deffo sounds electrical, would agree probally crank sensor starting to fail.

Thanks guys what a bunch of legends will give it a go.

I should get a 1 flash 2 flashes 1-2 (diagnosis start) and then get the real codes x-x (which in crank sensor case would be 1, then 9)?

Just want to make sure I don't miss anything.

The other piece of advice is, DON'T drive a car with a bad crank sensor!  Not safe!

Mine gave no warning.  Consider yourself extremely lucky so far.

Hi again guys - thanks so much for all the replies.

Confirmed by paperclip test - code 19 = Crank Sensor.

Didn't realise it was such a bugger to get to so will check which type I have over weekend and get her all fixed up early next week. Dealer recommends the square type with the pins all the way up to the shrouding but worth checking one suspects.

Now, to get home from work safely - you're quite right there is no warning at all when she goes, I do consider myself extremely lucky so far!

Dealer gave me the wrong one first time.  PITA.  My advice, take the current sensor out ASAP and get a ride to the stealers.  Keeps you from driving the car, and makes sure that you get the right one!

Just changed mine today. No warning at all. Parked up as normal and it wouldn't fire the next day but turned over fine. The only code was 31, no 19. Checked for spark and fuel pressure, both missing so got a new sensor.

Fitted this morning and she's as smooth as ever again.

mine did that,i took it out and cleaned the old oil off it an its still in the car and running fine 10,000 miles later

Guess how the day ended - took 2.5 hours to get home 12 miles...

(pic taken by nameless passenger Sandra leaning over btw, with no engine running the brakes where rock-solid and poop, and the steering was heavy - note the aa dude told me to "keep up on the wheel or you'll rip your front bumper off" - I was busy  )




That fuel consumption gave me an extra 0.1MPG on my average over 3000 miles
