could do with a little help here. my 3.0l has a VERY rattly top end, have spoke to a few members & they seem to think lifters. injectors a little noisy aswell. she has done 117 thou but had new engine at 45 odd thou due to belt tensioner collapsing & destroying engine, so only done about 70 thou. it needs cam gaskets & cam belt but would like to do it all in one go, does anyone have a parts cost idea & does anyone fancy a weekend job?.

how old is the oil
Is the level ok?
I think you need to get a pressure tester on it and if delivery pressure is low, consider checking the strainer for obstructions.

Worry about that before you go doing any other jobs

if rattly when cold just change the oil and then again in 2 or 3k.
if all the time  iwould look further as thread above. but note the link says 8nm at the top, this erfers to the cam cover bolt torque setting NOT the cam shaft cap bolt setting, obviously.

Not sure i would be wanting something in my engine done up to 8nm without lock tight, lock wire, split in, r clip and what ever else i can find to stop it coming undone, ibetter go and check my top end i think.

If everything runs true then there should not be any need for the caps to be tight as they are only containing centrifugal force

Of course loose is plain stupid

just checked mark dtms v6 torque value guide, and yep, there it is,
8nm cam cap to cylinder head.

will have to check that, as its had a replacement motor(short engine i pressume) then it will have had the re-useable bits put on it, wonder if the lifters are the old ones & where damaged. just a thought.  :-/

Just checked the Haynes manual (1994-99 V6), it quotes 8nm (or 6 lbf ft for us oldies) for camshaft bearing cap bolts.

No asterix either to denote using locktight or any other additional securing method.

This is less torque than my motorbike takes for the camshaft to bearing cap bolts (yamaha FJ1200 torque is 12nm (8.7 lbf ft)!

So it does make you wonder what alloy VX use eh??

Mind you, the fj does rev to 9,700 rpm redline and vibrate like hell at 4,500 so maybe the japs knew this and added a bit of torque just to be sure!

The fj does nought to sixty in 2.9 (on paper) in first gear, fastest i had it was 135 (abroad of course officer!).

So i expect some slight leeway on torque on this for a mega (not cam covers though). Reminds me I must buy a torque wrench that goes down that far!!

8nm is the same value the cam cover bolts, they festen a PLASTIC cam cover and and a seal, i would have bet money the cap would be more, only a pound mind.
