BBA reman want 450 quid for a recon unit!

I've seen one in the states, and an waiting for a price from him for shipping, but I wondered if there's one closer to home!

Did you ask them how much to diagnose/repair yours ?? I had that done for £130 !!  Can't believe their prices would rise that much in a year !!

Thought replacement from Vx "only" around £300?
Have another recon contact - will post up when i get home from work.

Try emailing info@ecu-testing.com who repair abs ecu's.  They may be able to help.

the syptoms are these:

When I switch on the car the lights for the abs/traction control go out.

When I pull away, there is what feels like a large power drain as the car's engine note changes, and the lights come on for ABS/Traction control.

The unit is sat underneath the Power steering fluid reservoir which was leaking when I bought the car.  It was covered in thick deposit of oil grease.

I wonder if I should first remove the unit from the car and clean the unit and contacts first in case there is a short circuit caused by oil contamination, somehow though, I doubt it!

Thought the ABS/TC unit on the v6 was the big box with the brake pipes coming out of it, located on the passengers side by the engine??

It is, and the PAS fluid reservoir sits right on top of it!

I'll get that list to you asap!

Symptons are of dodgy abs ecu - possible may be caused by PS fluid leak.  You do not have to remove the unit to clean contacts and that is worth a try first!  You need to remove ecu plug - locked in with plastic slide (usually pink in colour) - slides out towards wing - careful its easy to bust - i slipped a knife blade in between it and ecu and eased it - a spray of wd40 may help.  When its as far as it will go plug pulls out upwards. Clean both plug and socket with carb cleaner (cold engine) to degrease, followed by a liberal dose of contact cleaner.  Refit plug, slite lock back and try out.

Wish u luck, changing ecu is an rsol of a job - bitter experience!!

If it is fubarred then my guess is just the ECU has gone .. so a refurb of that will be well less than a complete reconditioned unit.. get bba-reman to requote you on just an ecu repair ...

To remove entire ABS/TC unit including ecu...

Undo 10mm bolt holding front of box in place...remove ECU lead...and undo the brake pipes...

prise front of box out of metal mountings...may involve bending the front of the mounting slightly...but far quicker, far easier and mounting will just bend back...then you just need to undo the plastic cover to undo the internal wiring and undo the extra wiring round the back...

Only really need to undo the bracket holding the unit in place if you need to get to the passenger side engine mount...and even that can just about be got to from underneath...

15 minute job...

If bba charged £130 for a refurb ecu, it would be a better deal to get a refurb one from Autotek Electronics for £65  

I still wouldn't rule out a 2nd hand one although £50 against £65 incl warranty not so attractive - thats the route i went down on mine - £40 vs £130 bba - lucky to source one from exactly same year/model so "Tech2ing" not required.  Likely for refurb route that Tech2 will be required.

Sev needs to weight up pros & cons.

When refitting abs unit i believe you need use of a Tech2 to be able to bleed abs unit!  No doubt TB or Mark can confirm.

I'll forst clean out all the contacts, as you've said.  Yes, £50 vs 65 for recon is difficult, but we'll see.

Is it possible to remove the ecu without disturbing the modulator assembly or is it all done in one hit?

If that's the case, and I also need TB to Tech2 the bleeding, then I may as well just wait till I can book it into him.

Why would the Tech2 be needed to bleed the unit?

When my ECU went, just the ECU was removed/replaced.. the brake module was left in-situ.

I believe the tech2 is needed to simulate ABS action in order to bleed all the little ports inside the module. The mechanic who did my ECU was adamant that if the ecu repair did not fix the problem he was not willing to take the module off..... for that very reason ..

But he was right .. ECU repair solved the problem ..
