Any backstreet auto shop will make you a set of plates up with any number you want, without having to prove ownership.

All you need is the number of a similar car, make, model and colour etc. that you want to 'clone'. Go to an Asda carpark, or Tesco, find a car that looks similar to your Red VW Golf for example, and your set.

So, all in all, pretty pointless.

it would be a brilliant idea if number plate sellers stuck to the rules of getting proof before selling plates

The trick, apparently, is to try and make your car look unique. That way there can be no mistake that it's not your car when they look at their photo's.

I might try that.  ;D

Forget the plates though, it's a waste of money.

Hi Chaps
I believe the proof of ownership requirement for getting plates made is not applicable in Scotland, so many ebay plate traders are based in Scotland.
Also if you are having plates made for "show purposes only" again no proof required.

So I am led to believe.

Mike

Number plate theft is rife in east london so not such a bad idea, even more so now that petrol is so expensive. First you hear of it is when plod knocks on your front door wanting to know why you did'nt pay for your full tank of motion lotion & your car has no plates, they are even giving away special screws that can't be removed that easily :-/

They get around that by calling them "Showplates"
