cold start problems 2.2 CD manual
« on: 07 September 2008, 19:56:48 »

Hi everyone! I'm female, an Omega nut a newie & this is a 1st ever posting anywhere.. I'm apologising beforehand. I love my W reg, Omega 2.2 CD & was gutted when I heard Vauxhall ceased production. This is my 2nd & I'm doing a bit of mooching for my 3rd. In the meantime, the cold weather has crept in & my dread of getting to work in the mornings is back with a vengance. You see there's something wrong with the engine during cold morning start up & its been in the garage x 3 for 3 consecutive winters, 3 diagnostic tunnings & mechanic can't find anything wrong with it. I get a blank expression from the lads at the garage when I try to describe what happens, I'm probably not giving them the correct terminology but, I absolutely know ever pink, knock or squeal from my Omega...I insist it is only related to the engines 1st start of the day, in winter ONLY. So, I've said (to describe my knowledge of car engines as 'basic' would be a wild exaggeration) "is it not the automatic choke lads?" has been met with laughs & sniggers from the garage. I'm searching this site for someone out there that MUST have had the same prob.... its not took long, to my shock I found this posting
Omega 2.2 Auto cold start rough running
25. Aug 2008 at 22:42    Hi,

Can any one help,

I have a problem with cold starting my omega.

Its a 2.2 CD Auto, 02-51 with 71k, FSH.

It does turn over and start, but runs rough, pops and splutters, touch the throttle, and it will stall.

It lasts for about 10-15 seconds with no throttle, after which it settles and runs fine.

On immediate restart, everything is fine, and no problems all day, until overnight stand, and then same again.

It did once put the engine EML on, it code read as misfire on cylinder 3, so I changed the plugs and cleared it, no difference.

I have also tried an alternative air flow meter, again, no luck, it was from another car though, but it worked fine on that.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Paul

Only difference is mines a manual & "throttle" bit doesn't apply, but adding - attempts to fight it by putting my foot down on the gas, is overwon by my Omega's engine rev-down, spluttering to a stop/cut out. Engine will restart - no messing! Then, it will drive better & after 20 secs or so, its running as per norm! Please, help, anyone..tell me what the heck is causing this so, I can tell the mechanic in terms he understands, to get the blinding fault fixed. In doing so, you'll end my torment.

I'm pretty sure Paul's problem on his was actually cured with a NEW Mass Air Flow Meter (MAF) - much to his surprise as well!

I have a strange theory...When turning on the ignition, wait 10-15 seconds before turning it to the starter position and see if it still does it.  Just a wierd idea in my head (Hot wire sensor not heating up quick enough)..

I could only see this being beneficial on Diesels with glow plugs?
