Door/Bumper mouldings, paint or not
« on: 09 September 2008, 11:53:54 »

Hi all, I am considering getting my black door strips and bumper bit's colour coded as the rest of the car is star silver and I think it would make the car look a bit more modern.

Has anyone done this and could suggest a reasonable price a paint shop would charge, or could some bits from a facelift model be used to update my car( mini facelift ) i.e door strips / bumpers.

You could always buy & fit the face lift bump strips, they're cheaper than the old style too.

If you do it ensure the platic is keyed properly or else it will peel off. Not sure how to do it though. There is some form of plastic primer ot there. SOmeone else will be able to advise on that side of things no doubt

Personally I would'nt bother painting them it'll only peel off in time :y

The face lift door strips fit but you'll need to bond them on,
as for the bumpers the rear is a straight fit but you'll need the plastic back inner wheel arches, the front not so easy (I've done this to mine :y) ,..... what about a pre face lift irmscher bumper :question

PRE face lift car's bump strips are bonded on too, there's clip at each end for location.
The chrome/stainless strip is seperate from the bumpers, it's just held in with the painted section if you wanted to remove it completely.

Yep..plastic primer is required (although some painters here never use that and the roads are full of funny results  ;D)

The surface of plastic must be sanded(first 800 than 1200), after the primer dried also primer surface must be sanded (1200,1500 grid)

And finnlly you can use normal auto paint and laquer..

ps: during sanding the surface (plastic or primer must not be scratched deeply otherwise metallic paints show every detail)
