oil fizzing out of self level shock... ARSE!
« on: 14 September 2008, 22:39:22 »

having spent the last week battling with fitting a cat back exhaust and 2 re bushed wishbones with the valuable help of a mate. We went out for a curry to reward ourselves, 4 of us in the car, returned home to find a small puddle of oil and a fizzing hissing noise from the rear. Closer inspection revealed red oil fizzing and bubbling, clearly under pressure, out from under the rubber gater and forming a puddle on the drive, its also splattered up the back of the wheel arch. 'dangle berries'!
So, questions are can a seal be replaced to fix? Suspect not. Would fooling the level sensor to raise the rear to max hight have caused shock to fail?suspect not. Would any work on the wishbones have caused a problem as the pump is in the front wing area? Suspect not. Could the air pump have over stressed the shock? Suspect not.
Has it just failed due to poor condition under the gater as it was very rusty and mankey and ill just have to get some from vx on tc as no other bugger makes em? Suspect... yes defo.
£75 plus vat each i think i read on here a while back. Is all that correct? Cheers.

rather dealers, just rang my local Reading branch, not in stock, so have to order, 2 day delivery if you want the tc discount. Nowhere else has them near Reading and you have to come in and pay in person over the counter to place the order. Stuff that.

Rang slough just up the rd, 3 on the shelf 158 all in for the pair, just come n pic em up. Sorted. Still bloody steep tho.

The Reading branch is Eden owned i beleive, shant be bothering with them again if i can help it.

Eden never have anything in that I want, even normal stuff like water pump and the white door bushes had to be ordered.

Does not suprise me. I rang them back to tell them i had got far better service from Slough. Parts said thanks for the feedback and they where aware of the problem. I guess they dont want the business.

158 for the pair from slough, ive done shocks on a
2.0 but not self levelers. You have to add air first or something?

Change as you would normal shocks. Replace air pipe and then when all done start the car and the air pump will do the rest ;)

Fitted mine then "primed" them with the blow gun on the airline.
As you blow air in you will see the ballons inflate to lift the car.
Then just attach the levelling pipe ( make sure the "o" ring is intact and seating correctly) then same the other side and you're done.

The instructions say to add a little air before fitting .. I believe this is to ensure the "ballooons" are not trapped which might cause them to rupture if the weight of the car is on them and they try to inflate ...

Probably well wrong .. but hey ho .. :)
