2.5 v6 ignition leads
« on: 11 September 2008, 20:38:41 »

Hi All, I am a newbie to this site, and hoping someone can help or at least give me a few pointers. I have an omega reflection ('98) 2.5 v6, which has all of a sudden started running on 5 cylinders. I took out the plug(number 1) an changed it with another one but still the same which indicates not a plug problem. I am thinking of changing the leads but didn't want to go down the, change everything until it 's cured road. Is there anything else it is most likely to be?, how easy is it to change the leads?, i looked at them and cannot see where they go or how to access them.
          Thanking you in advance
                                   Regards  Fozzy

Think you really need to be checkin for the Omega classic oil in plug wells, caused by blocked breathers. Oil cooks your ht leads causing missfire. Check  plug wells, and while your pulling plugs check the base of the leads for damage to the rubber, nics and tears can allow the spark to escape. Also check the other end of the lead for a good connection to the dis pack. If all thats ok and your happy its not
the plugs(40k life) then its a gamble on changing the dis pack or the leads. Some say more than one cylinder and likely to be dis pack.
Why are you sure by changing 1 plug that its not plugs? Vx do best deal on 4 electrode plugs, euro car parts do ht leads for 35 quid but are not very good, not numbered and the lengths are not right for the omega, vx want tun plus a side. Plenty to choose from in between. Dis from a breaker. A couple on here. Hth.

Just to clarify, you have only checked one spark plug?

Or swapped 1 for another on the same engine?

thnx for rapid response, got a new plug and tried that, the plug end of the lead looks ok, can't see where other end of plug lead goes to or even how to get to it. There was a bit of oil in number 1 plug well Though (the one thats not firing). How do i get the leads of to check/clean them.

Sorry not making it very clear am i?. I am only assuming its running on 5 and number 1 not firing as that is the only lead i could pull off in the time i had. It made no difference with the lead on or off to the running of the engine. Mileage is 113k if that helps, plugs are ngk twin electrode.

Think the best thing for me to do would be to wait till sat when not working and get under the bonnet and have a good clean up. Are the breathers easily accessible?

No worries, just making sure. Sounds like leads to me, but i would check the lead dis pac connection first. Does it come back in at any point or is it same regardless of engine speed?

Yep, oil in wells from blown cam cover gaskits caused by blocked breathers. For me, plenum off, get oil out dont let it fall down the bore, cam covers off, change gaskits and o rings apply sealent, re fit covers torque to 8nm, new plugs/ leads, clean breathers plenum and throttle body while your there. Re build. Guides in maintenance section. Its all been well covered on here. Hth

Pop the plenum off and check the plug leads and wells as already described.

Also, pop the plugs out and check the insulators for signs of arcing (you will see a thin line down them)

Sorry for the slight hijack...

I've just done this job including leads.  Bought 'Bosch Silicone Power' from ebay and was surprised to find the leads the wrong length and the plug fittings also the wrong length and a poor fit in the cam cover holes.

Anyone else had this with Bosch?  Thought they would be alright - or are my 'Bosch' leads dodgy Chinese fakes perhaps?  They work fine.

Out of interest, anybody know for sure an aftermarket lead set that has correct length leads and proper plug fittings?  Do you really have to go Vx price to get this?

Cheers,

Liam
