2.5 TD Hot Start Trouble

I have an R reg 2.5td. Most things work fine but when the engine is warm it doesn,t like to start. It may take a good 30 secs on the key for it to fire into life.Starts first time from cold, any ideas out there as to what it could be??

As an experiment, pour a jug of cold water on injection pump, and see if that helps...

Do them pumps have problems when hot?

Just that Stu's doesn't like starting when its hot.  :-? He thought it was something to do with the glow plugs? :-/

There is some kind of temp sensor in pump, and this stops glow plugs coming on.  Pretty common problem on beemers, range rovers, and Omegas.

I've heard that the chip helps, perhaps some of the chipped tractor owners can comment - mine doesn't suffer, but then it didn't before chipping either.

Guess I'll just have to get mine chipped sooner then  ;)
They loved me on the Speedferry filling it up with smoke trying to start it!

It'll be getting done as soon as I've sorted the blowing manifold gasket and the mot this month, if it passes easily I'll get it done as a treat for it!

Someone did tell me that it could be a crank sensor possibly as well, I put mine down to the glowplugs as I know they aren't that brilliant

Wait for feedback from other chipped tractor owners, to see if this is cured.

Mines chipped but can't say it is difficult to start hot. From cold it starts at the first turn, from hot it does turn over longer but always starts on the first try, if you know what I mean. No difference really as before pre chip.
Heard about leak off pipes causing this problem, but I don't know whether it could be in this case. Anyone?

was srarter motor on mine. ok when cold forever when warm. when cold the car has exhaust brake to help build combustion pressure but when warm bypasses this and if starter not fast enough cant turn fast enough for pressure

..but the glow plugs are not used when the engine is hot, only when cold or ECU thinks engine is too cool :question :question

Eliminated that one on mine, as I had them replaced when I first got the car

I've made several recent posts on this very subject .....

It seems to be a common problem on 'tractors' and mine was no exception. You'll also note that the glow-plug light doesn't illuminate on anything other than a cold-start, so this also doesn't help matters.

Mine was cured by simply changing the battery - this being done as a last-ditch bid, as the original was not quite 100%. The alternator had previously been confirmed as spot-on.

I have two, (as yet unconfirmed), theories regarding this.
First, the new battery positively whizzes the engine over, so although the slow warm-start problem may still exist, the vastly increased cranking speed makes the problem insignificant, ie; it warm-starts promptly.
Second, the new battery obviously exudes increased power, and has thereby had something of a 're-map' effect on the engine management side.

Mine had a new battery when I bought it, now I've started to look for what can be causing the poor hot starting it seems to have got worse, so I'm gonna forget all about it and do another job instead!
