AIRBAG LIGHT
« on: 22 September 2008, 09:14:18 »

Hi all,

Been off the forum for a while due to laptop dying.

My airbag light has come on.
Checking through service history I noticed something like a coupling ring being changed 2-3 yrs ago. Are these likely to go this regularly or do you think a reset will cure things?

Any ideas would be welcome!!

You need a code reader of some sort to tell you what the air bag system is finding fault with. Cheapo Tech II should do it.

Ideally need a live data feed, so a decent tester needed.  A cheapo can reset it if not a current problem.

I was going to be in Reading tomorrow, but thats cancelled as some useless bloody project manager who has had a week to arrange configuring the network switches has not done his job.

Might be worth asking one of the Reading/Swindon members to reset it, and see if it comes back, before trapsing all the way over here :y

Thanks, I wasn't aware they had a tech 2. Can you give some member names?

I was planning to go to Bicester for some Shopping so it's not out of the way for me.

A few have cheapos.  Whether or not they are willing is a different matter, so won't post names.  I'm sure they will pipe up in next day or so when they see this thread ;)

And I detest Bicester Village with a passion. Shite goods sold at expensive prices.  And thats the genuine stuff, let alone the fakes  :-X

I have an ELM327 and a GS500, which are OBDII "cheapies" .. willing to help if I can .. Swindon area, I'm around most of the time now I'm officially a "man of leisure" .. :)

Don't know if either of those would read airbag units, but they can put the ELM out ...

OBDII only applies to drivetrain, so unlikley a generic OBDII reader will talk to SRS system. Definately won't on prefacelifts.

The light on the dash which is a car with a spanner sticking out of the roof is the electronic (or engine depending on which definition you read) Management Light .. comes on when the ECU detects errors.

The light can be "read" in various ways .. on some cars by "paperclipping" on others by the "pedal trick" ... details here ..

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687

Another way is with a reading device. The Tech2 vauxhall device is about 2 grands worth !! cheaper versions do bits and bobs. I have 2 cheapies which can read SOME codes and turn the light off... there are several different versions/software about some do more than others.

A trip to Vx to plug in for a Tech2 session is about £80 with no work being done !!!  so if you are keen/interested/keeping the car it might be worth investing in a cheapie reader/resetter.
