I'll have to remove an eye ball and tuck it in there then.

Point taken mark.  Time to bite the bullet and loose a bit more skin then.

At last,finally removed intake plenum etc.

Did a static resistance test across matching pairs of leads,still connected via coil pack. Each pair came up 20k to 22k ohms,would seem the coil pack is ok in that respect,I'll wheedle it out anyway and check its general condition.

My mind keeps going back to the code 13 (o2 sensor 1 open loop)  I got with the paper clip check,could this cause the problem I am having,misfiring and strong fuel smell?
I assume sensor 1 is drivers side?

Finally got the coil pack out--had remove wiper assembly bolts to get that extra 1/8" clearance.

Looking at the pack it looks to be in good nick,no bulging or splitting anywhere.
There are some small 2mm-3mm holes on the underside through which I can see what I take to be the laminations of the coils or a screening can,these are slightly rusty in colour.
Ive done a static resistance check and I get about 18K across each pair of coils.
The primary circuits are all reading about 1ohm.
Leads are all good as far as I can tell, various resistances but nothing ridiculously high or low.

Its either clean everything up and put it back or get a new pack anyhows.

Anything else need checking?

May have said before but, check the plug insulators for signs of tracking and clean them with Jif (Cif) or a green scouring pad.

All the connectors look clean and are a good tight fit.

Can things like knock sensors cause misfiring?

Nope.

Knock snsors and lambdas rarely cause a miss, loss of power or increased consumption maybe.

Can you do a vac test on the engine with gearbox in neutral, warmed up and aircon etc off.

I did all of the above when I had a mis-fire. Turned out to be 1 single lead. I only spotted it by chance when I saw it chucking out a sideways spark from the connector at the dis pack end.
Had I did just a visual check of leads I still would not have found it as it was split under the L-shape connector.
Worth a new set of leads as opposed to replacing a non faulty dis pack.

Phate321:- Had you done any work on the car prior to this, you know,something to have caused the split or was it spontaneous?

Just to recap-my symptoms, very rough running/misfiring, strong unburnt fuel smell (initially accompanied with the bad eggs pong from convertor), fuel consumption on the run never going above 20 mpg.

No loss of oil or coolant.

Mark:- 'fraid I dont have the gear to do a vacuum test :-/

Fitted new coil pack Saturday afternoon,purring like a kitten.
Also took the opportunity to clean breathers and throttle body etc.Running better than when I first bought it.
Took a 10 mile detour at 3am on way home from work just for the fun of it! :y

My sincere thanks to all for advice and encouragement.
