Emissions Light On (2.6 facelift)

Has just come on and it stays on when car is re-started. Car's running fine though.

Last time it did this it was the dodgy petrol Tesco's were flogging. As it's a facelift am I right in thinking the paperclip test doesn't work and it needs tech2ing to see what the fault code is?

Would that be the 02 sensors?

Just your pre-cats aren't as efficient as they used to be. Common issue on 3.2's.

Don't worry, your main cats will be well up to the job and you won't have an issue at MOT time

OK, I'll need that explaining. I understand Cat's but pre-cats? Car's got 125000 on the clock so normal wear and tear?

2.6 and 3.2 have four cats, two per bank. The main cats are up to the job that they were designed for however the pre-cats (much smaller cats in the elbow where the dowpipes meet the horizontal exhaust pipes simply aren't as effecient as time goes by (due to their size I guess).

The car will still be well within the emissions levels specified for MOT as the main cats are working fine. You can try running some Cataclean through the system when you are down to 15 Litres of fuel which may help a little and running on V Power (better cleaning properties) also helps keep the lamp off.

What happens is that there is a threshold level set in the engine management that isn't very tolerant of the worn precats, once this threshold level is reached the lamp is illuminated. NB the lamp is solidly lit, if it flashes you have a different problem.

My emissions lamp comes on about once a week and I used to reset it, generally can't be bothered now!!  ::)

...oh and forgot to mention, on the 3.2/2.6 the exhaust is different - it is one continuous item from the joint to the manifold to the joint past the main cat (so downpipe, pre cat, main cat are all welded together), Dealer TC price was £711 a side when I last checked.... hence why living with the lamp on / or buying a device capable of talking to a Bosch Motoronic 3.1.1 ecu is a much cheaper option!  ;D

Incidently, it's your Emissions lamp that's on, not your engine management (even though it's a picture of the engine!!!!)

I don't have the same problem but my EML has been an issue for over a year now, since last year July, have had it reset several times, but comes back on eventually so no point re-setting, the faults are fuel trims banks 1 & 2, but car runs fine, have some cataclean but have'nt used it yet, think Bob.dent has the same problem with his 3.2 :-?

v common on 2.6/3.2 over 100k,mot not a prob,u can always remove the bulb................
