2.0 16V 1999 Estate - new owner with some queries.
« on: 28 October 2008, 17:17:04 »

Hi all
I've just got hold of a July 1999 registered GLS estate with the 2.0l petrol engine and auto box. The car is in reasonable condition, drives fine and (other than a blow somewhere in the exhaust) I have a couple of queries:
1) Engine hunts when idling - the forum suggests the Idle Control Valve is the most likely suspect - any where else I should look
2) The tyres do not 'look' right - they are 195/65/R15 - the handbook states I should have 205/65/R15 - so, should I get them replaced asap with 205 or is it OK to tootle around on the 195's?? (or is the handbook wrong?)

I don't have a picture of the rims but the ones on the car here:

look identical

Thanks

Graeme

Hi Graeme.

Welcome to OOF  :)

As a former 2.0 owner, I can say that the ICV is a fairly straightforward job to do. And it has a 99% chance of sorting your idle problem. (My auto used to rev up to 2,500 rpm...  :()

The maintenance guide section is well worth reading through. For convenience, the 2.0 ICV job is here:

It's worth a go. A few clips, half a dozen bolts and a Saturday afternoon.  :y

.....................Also clean the breathers as well as this will only block up the ICV again plus cause the cam cover gasket to leak as well.

it's not too bad to get too if you take off the intake ducting with the screwable clip things and then the icv has two allen key screw things (one lower down than the other)

hope that helps, also if you put some carb cleaner or similar down the breather pipe with the choke on it (thinner of the two coming off the cam rocker cover
