How on earth did that happen? Bolts not torqued properly maybe?

I would guess that the coolant got nasty and broke down the gasket material.

I have seen another set of pictures just like that- from MaxV6's old car IIRC.

Hi,
This looks like a case of no, or very weak mixture, and no regular changes of anti freeze, so hence no corrosion protection to me.

holey crap. Bloody amazing how much has gone before it failed. When you mentioned water in the breather system it reminded me of another post a while back. The guy had mayo" pooring OUT"of the air intake to plenum. It was coming up the breathers filling the plenum and coming out the throttle iirc. Trouble is, to a point, the breathers run in cooler air same as the filler cap so a certain amount of mayo is likely. My Mrs polo breather block on the back of the engine had a lump of mayo which got me worried. The oil still had a gold tint to it though so was happy with that.

Dont suppose you have a pic of the oil from the sump? Yeah, like you've nothing more important to do...

Good luck with the re build. Is it worth skimming the heads if its not overheated?
