mot failed
« on: 07 November 2008, 10:13:16 »

Hi all
Just took the car for mot & it failed on broken rear spring & emissions.
If anyone can give me any advice or information on how to sort the emissions I would be greatful.
Thanks in advance.

First thing I was going to suggest (breathers and ICV clean).  Maybe an engine flush/oil change wouldn't go amiss.  How badly did it fail on emissions?  Cat ok?

Might be worth getting hold of a gas analyser which you can get fairly cheap from halfords and the like.  I'd clean the whole throttle body assembly as well as breathers and ICV, pay particular attention to the jet at the top of the inlet manifold you'll probably find it is completely blocked.

Seriously, it's a doddle even for a beginner.  Here's a couple of guides on how to do it.  It really isn't difficult, any socket set will be good enough and you may need a couple of torx as well which you can find from halfords or a factors.

Have a read through these...

You should have got an emissions test report with the refusal. Post it up and it might shed some light on why it failed.

On the sheet its got fast idle test its got fail next to lambda. its the only place on there with a fail reading next to figures.According to sheet my reading at lambda was 1.04 the max being 1.03.
Hope that helps !

If its not been serviced recently I would do that (oil/filter change, air filter, fuel filter, plugs) and the breather clean previously mentioned.

None of that is difficult esp. as you have a 4 pot.

OK. Sounds like the cat is fine, as you say. Is there any possibility of an air leak into the exhaust system? Manifold gasket perhaps? Any trouble codes stored in the engine ECU? Could be a lazy Lambda sensor perhaps?

I would be inclined to try cleaning out the breathers, etc. as said, give it a service and a quick "Italian tune-up" on the way to the re-test wouldn't hurt.
