Hi to all, well, I got the shocks and springs done, and now all I have to do is the rear brakes once I drill and easyout the mashed brake retaining bolts that some muppet gorillad on.

However, I digress...

When I did my cambelt, due to it causing me a bit of a kerfufle, I've since had a tapping noise which originally was quite loud.

I'm sure it's coming from the back side of the engine, and I'm pretty damn certain that it's LHS cylinder 3.

Now the noise didn't go away, but two weeks ago I changed the oil again this time using GM and it did quieten down.

With the weather getting colder, the noise is very pronounced on cold starts but does subside when the engine is warmed through - however, I still know it's there as my ears are just tuned to it now!

The reason I've put the question to the board, is this:

I'm pretty damn certain it's the hydraulic lifter, and until the weather warms up I intend to do cock all about it as I've got plans for some 3.0L cams to go in when I get my paws on some - and then I can hit it all in one go.

But, could it be anything else?

I can't imagine an echo effect 'throwing' the sound from another part of the engine.

Any suggestions, or is my diagnosis pretty much there?

I have a 1998 2.5 too mate and I have the same.

We (the Reading Meet Usual Suspects) have diagnosed mine as a lazy hydraulic lifter. If I keep the car, I am going to get myself some of those 3 litre cam things and will change the lifters at the same time.

Had same on my saloon - couple of oil/filter changes cured.  Used GM semi synth 10-40

Is it worth getting some of that cleaning stuff that you ADD to the oil and run for 15mins at 1500rpm before draining the oil and changing the filter?

Use it on my Vectra once and the engine did LOOK clean inside.

Mike it wont harm the engine but bear in mind if it hasn't been done before then just a few regular oil changes should do the trick. Also you must be on about the upgrade to the 3.0ltr cams in you 2.5ltr engine.

If you do an oil change again you could try the castrol magnatec is does do what it say's on the bottle. I have tried this before in an omega and it did quieten down the noise and then dissapeared.HTH

It might actualy do some harm!

All to often it dislodges gunk that then collects in the sump and blocks the oil pickup strainer....

Mines a bit tappy every now and then... Started at the York meet when we replaced the cambelt!   :-/

Theres a few strange rattles and squeeks that appears to be getting worse first thing in the morning and it runs on 3 cylinders for a second or two if its damp and cold now! (Sounds like death warmed up basicly!! )

However, it still pulls like a train! (Even when shes going sideways!   - but I would never do that  )

Tappy noise is common on start up; sticky lifter; I had the same. 2 oil changes in quick (250 mile) succession has cured it for good.
