hi guys, after a bit of hassle i found out that the previous owner had electric welded the manafold and honestly had made a mess of it. i looked around the scrappies but no luck so i bought a new one from  ebay for £90 inc the gasket. had it fitted yesterday and all ok.thanks for your help once again.
