Gearbox - whether to get it upgraded...
« on: 09 November 2008, 06:58:17 »

All,

Here's some feedback on a recent gearbox upgrade. I took the car over to TheBoy a few weeks ago for a general Tech2 checkover and upgrade. The whole job took around half and hour, and the upgrade has revolutioned the drive.

Beforehand, the car was pretty smooth but it sometimes dropped into top gear with a bit of a thump and also needed a bit too much gas to get it away from standstill. The 'overtake' change down also seemed to be a little too long and harsh. None of that anymore! It's amazing what a change in the software can do, my car feels as if it's got a new gearbox. The changes were noticeable straight away, silky smooth pulloff and changedown with no thump going into top.

I drove the car home via A and B roads and loads of roundabouts in MK and it was brilliant. The gear changes are more when I want them and much smoother, especially when pulling away, and coming back onto the gas from the brake.

If you've been wondering whether it's worth getting your gearbox upgraded, stop wondering and get it booked in! You'll love the difference.

8-)

Cheers
Neville

ah Jamie and his magic tech 2. Its a wonderfull thing isn't it. So wish i had one, but i dont fancy paying for it though. Its pricey to run as well from what i gather so defo. worth supporting him with some diagnostic sessions booked in. As a service this is invaluable to the forum as its not available anywhere else. And no not at the dealers either, as they simpley dont know how to use it.

The software upgrades are worth it on their own, climate upgrade is equally good imho. You may well be amazed at how many ecus the mig has and what can be learned checked and changed on the car.

As Neville says, if you live near Jamie "The Boy" in Brackley, Mark Dtm in Nottingham, Hotel 21 , i think i saw, has one in Scotland, and Kevin Wood has one in Alton Hampshire until the new year, then go see them and get your car tech 2'd, def. worth it. Or if your near any of the meets they attend go along. Def worth the beer money they charge. A dealer will be loads more.

The forum has sorted me via tech 2 with
Key blade and re programme/erase old key codes from previous owners. Helped me sleep at night knowing the missing spare key would not work with the car.
Programme spare with new bliper codes.
Climate and gearbox updates, much improved.
Cleared missfire codes.
Slight tweaks to fan speed settings on cc
.
That lot at a dealer would be in the region of £340.
Through OOF, £40 iirc over a few  sessions. Go see them, its worth it.  :y

Excellent, descriptive feedback Neville :)

OOF is very fortunate to have 4 real, genuine Tech2s scattered about the UK, I'm sure no other car club can match that.

Brackley, Northants/Oxon/Bucks border - TheBoy
West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire - Marks DTM Calib
Four Winds, Nr Alton, Hampshire - Kevin Wood
Somewhere North of Hadrian ;D, not far from Fife - Hotel21

The one in Hampshire is short term, so if you are in that area and need a Tech2 session, try to get there within the next couple of months.

I have just added the 4 Tech2 locations to the OOF Map as green markers.

I've also pasted below the standard text that I send out every time I'm asked for the OOF passwrd (minus the password bit) and the highlighted line might prove useful if you're specifically looking for a Tech2.

HOW DO I ADD MY MARKER?

Centralise the map on your home location and zoom in until you can see your street clearly. Set your street/house to about 1 cm from the far right of the map (You'll see why in a minute)

Top Left - click "Add" --> "Marker"

Follow your nose, by adding your address. It will have a link on that dialog where it allow you to place your marker by clicking on "Map Select a location". Use this link as it will help you to make sure your marker is accurately positioned.

When you initially create a marker you recieve a dialog box with a unique  URL. COPY AND KEEP THIS URL/LINK - IT IS YOUR KEY TO EDIT YOUR MARKER ONLY!!!

Suggestion: Visit the unique URL/LINK page and add it to your favourites for future reference.

HOW DO I MOVE MY MARKER IF IT ENDS UP IN THE WRONG PLACE?

Visit your unique URL/LINK to access/change your marker.

Make sure your address is accurate.

Change the "MARKER" type in the drop down list to "MOVE"

PM me and ask me to move your marker to the address.

HOW DO I FIND MY MARKER ON THE MAP AMONGST EVERYONE ELSE'S?

TOP LEFT:

Click "Show List"

From the list which has now appeared on the right hand side of the screen select "Your Name". NB: List is sorted by Capital letters 1st and then alphabetically (Zorro appears before apple, but Apple appears before Banana)

Click on your Marker which is now highlighted on the map.

DID YOU KNOW?:

You can also switch the map markers on and off by type by clicking on the legend of marker types at the bottom left.

By the sounds of it my '99 pre facelift 2.5 Elite has already been done (it has a almost full main dealer history).

Is there any way of telling, ie a paperclip type test?

Only way is to plug in tech2 and see whats there, Afaik. There is no reason why a dealer would plug in tech2 for a service. Why do you think it has the latest software? Have you asked for a diagnostic? Even then they would not bother with the update most likely. You would have to ask for the update specifically and that would cause some head scratching. My 3.2 has full service history, not that its worth much, every out and bolt they touched was massively over tight. The Boy updated it on the first session. All as it left the factory until he worked his magic. Much better now.

I fear you over rate your dealer, although there are some good ones out there. Chances are though yours is still original version. Bit of a bugger your so far from civilisation.:-) Alton is the nearest to you i believe, as it stands?

Basicklly it calms the fans down, much more civilised and refined. You may find on auto when you adjust the temp. by one degree the fan speed will jump drastickly. May even make your eyes water or dry them out or make them tired on long journeys. You may then find your turning down the fan speed manually, not what "auto" on the climate controle is all about. The update sorts all that out.

Yep. But its not just that though, all the car systems can be checked and problems can often be spotted before they become more expensive. Or at least give you a chance to save up :-) then if you have an issue your already armed with an idea whats wrong. Coil packs on 2.6 and 3.2 are a good example. My car had  miss fire codes when i first got it, Jamie cleared them, i had not noticed any problems and the codes have not come back. But when i changed the plugs as part of the service schedule i took a good look at the coil packs and noticed tiny cracks in the plastic around the base on bank 1.3.5
Not good news but i now know what to expect if the car starts missing. As with all diagnostic work a tiny bit of knowledge can be a massive help. And more to the point, makes the dealers look really idiotic as they have this brilliant tool on the bench doing nothing and they dont/cant/wont use it/charge the earth for it. Muppets, they really are.
