Idle Speed Control Valve - Buy new or used?
« on: 13 November 2008, 17:52:19 »

Hi all - I've had the throttle assembly and bits cleaned yesterday.  The car is now experiencing irratic idling, i.e. currently idles at rest at 1000 RPM and when driven and disengage the clutch it can go up to about 2000 RPM before slowly coming back down to 1000 RPM.  Question is - do I buy a new one at about £110 - £120, or from vaux scrap yard quoting at £17?  Is it just a matter of taking the old one off and then fitting the new one?  I've got the required gasket ready and waiting!

Try a £17 one first, see if anything changes.

Could be a tired coolant temperature sensor feeding the ECU duff info about the engine temperature, possibly; or simply an air/vac leak.  Check all the vac hoses coming off the throttle body for condition and correct connectedness.

We've had no trouble with a pattern part from Ebay (about £35 from memory), looks 100% identical.  But we did have the CTS problem too.

Did the small breather jet in the intake manifold definitely get cleaned out (the 1.6mm dia. one, just below the throttle body)?

Sounds like your idle control valve isnt moving freely.
Did you do the work yourself? The throttle body and the edges of the throttle disc have to be spotless, the idea is that the throttle seals completely, any carbon left on the edges of the disk will allow air past and makes it hard work for the idle valve to compensate.
The idle contol valve has to be cleaned out of carbon and old oil, crud etc with solvent and then must be oiled lightly with thin oil, WD40 is not good enough for this.
You might just have to re-clean the icv and oil it, but check the throttle stop hasnt been adjusted in the past to fix a previous idle problem, the disk should just close and no more. If its open slightly the icv will have to be almost shut to compensate and it cant control properly in this position so its worth a look.

I didn't clean it myself, but trust the guys at my local garage.  I think will buy the £17 one first.  If it doesn't work then at least I've got a spare too.  I've been told that the part will come with a 6 month warranty on it...not bad considering the price.  Wish I could do the dismantling myself, but need my car running all the time and can't risk my lacking diy skills beating me!  Will it be a simple job of removing the old one and replacing it with the new?

Idle speed control valve changed.  The revs stay up at about 1200-1500 RPM as I press the clutch in as I come to a stop, but when I come to a halt it goes down to Idle speed.  Any other time whilst driving the revs drop down as I change gear, etc.  Idle speed is 1000-1100 RPM and will not drop.  I know the idle speed control valve does work as the engine drops RPM when I disconnect the connector.  It didn't do that on the old one.  I've cleaned both ends of the assembly and idle regulator and placed a new gasket.  This is getting rather annoying...any ideas?  I've also found that my exhaust is blowing!...Doh!
