Air leak/EGR/AFS fault
« on: 27 November 2008, 19:24:40 »

Hi all,
I think I have a fault with the above- Paperclip code shows 73- air flow sensor low voltage.
Looking on here it appears the most likely causes are;

AFS broke
EGR valve stuck/broke
Air Leak

Could someone point me in the right direction of how to check for airleaks- what am I looking for and where?
Also is it posable to check the AFS and/or EGR without buying new ones?

Ta

I usually check for air leaks with well thought out brief squirts of carb or brake cleaner.  Change in engine note shows that its leaking when it sooks in the cleaner....

EGR can just be blanked off with no real adverse effect.  its only used when the car is at motorway cruising revs....

Easiest way I know of finding air leaks is to lightly spray carb cleaner along each vac line in turn, whilst the engine is running, when(if) the engine note/speed changes it is because the carb cleaner has been sucked in though the vac leak, so investigate that area thoroughly. A wipe down with a bit of paper towel after each area is checked also gives you a nice clean engine.  :y :y

The other bits I'll leave to more knowledgeable folks .. :)

Edit .. must learn to type faster .. :(

The vacuum lines are small (about eigth inch diameter ) black plastic tubesrunning all over the engine bay. They are connected up to switches etc by short(maybe inch or so long bits of rubber tube about quarter inch in diameter).

When checking run your fingers along the length looking for chafes (holes from rubbing against something for the last ten years). Also check they are actually connected at each end and the rubber connector itself is not split underneath where you can't see it.

It is very easy for one to become disconnected following engine bay work.

That all originate from the 1/2" dia servo to manifold vacuum pipe!  :y

Which bit are you struggling with Mark? ;)

That all originate from ...... they start from

1/2" dia  ...... about the size of you little finger  ;)

servo  ..... big drum shaped thing on the driver's side of the  bulkhead.

manifold ..... big silver/grey thing at the top of a V6 engine.

vacuum .... suction

The non return valve over at the servo - seeabove  :y - has 1 or 2 'T' which easily break off.
