Sedate Throttle
« on: 29 November 2008, 09:58:52 »

I have a 96 3litre Elite seems fairly decent. When you put your foot on the accellerator there is a fair bit of travel before it changes from sedate and gentle pull away to bounce the back wheels mode. I didn't realise quite how marked this is until I jumped into the missus vec the other day.

I am assuming that this has been designed this way so rear passengers get a smooth ride. It is not a major problem to push harder on the pedal but I just wanted to check if this is how it should be or if there is something amiss.

er, how do you mean? A step in the delivery, (at 4k) not responding at lower revs?

No it isnt a flat spot as I know it. I adjust the seat so it seems right, (brakes, wheel, lights etc). WHen I apply pressure to the throttle starts moving forard gebtly, if I dont apply more pressure it peaks at just under 30mph on the flat. To get it to set off quickly I have to press the pedal a good inch and half to two inches, the pedal seems to do nothing in between. It is brilliant if you had a load of guests sipping champers in the back, they wouldn't spill a drop. Cos it works that well I think it is by design.

Its only when I jumped back into a V6 Vec applied the same pressure it set off like a scalded cat that I realised how much the difference was.

I may not be describing this very well but if you imagine a slow throttle on a bike, you have to twist it a long way before you start to go quick then the difference to a quick throttle wich does everything in a quarter tuen, thats the difference between the elite and the vec.

No, you get the gentle pull away when you press the pedal then there is nothing more for over an inch and a half push one the pedal then it starts again.

It is a 'dead area' in the pedal movement I guess. If it was dead from the start I could adjust it out with the cabel but you have some response then the dead area then more response.

Once past this area if you floor it it revs willingly and shoots of as you would expect. It just seems as if it is programmed to do this.

Is the vectra manual? just wondering if what you describe is the difference between an auto and a manual, which has a more "instant" feel to the transmission.
difficult to diagnose wether it,s a characteristic are a fault without actually being in the car.

Sorry, missed your post so just noticed the multi ram comment, I will have a read up as not sure what these are. Take it they are different from the two butterflies on the end of the V6 Vec plenum.

It is a 3.0 auto. This may be normal, I noticed it when I first got in the car but by the time I had driven it 160 miles home I wasn't noticing it any more. It was after jumping back in the vec it hit me but.
