Is it a write off??
« on: 07 November 2007, 20:30:12 »

As some of you know my dad owns an 1989 Astra which has not yet reached 18,000 miles on the clock and looks just like it did when it left the showroom................or it did untill the dustman decided to back the dust cart into it yesterday :'(
So the damage caused is one o/s/f wing, plastic inner arch, bumper and indicator. So my guess is they will write it off as by the book it is worth next to nothing, shame is, in reality it is still like a brand new car that has been waxed every weekend since it was new  8-) It will be a shame if the insurance dont take its condition into account  :-/

Tell them you'll buy it back and repair yourself?

If they do you could always buy it back and repair yourself.
IIRC the wings bolt on so get a replacement wing (maybe even right colour from scrappy)and other bits, spray it, then its an afternoon of spanner work and jobs a goodun.

Yes, that is what we will do Kevin if it gets written off. Will it be classed as a cat "c" or something then  :-/

if he plans on keeping and never selling, it shouldnt matter if it's a registered "cat" write-off

cosmetic would normally be Cat D i think

Make sure the insurance company - and the inspector who visits - know your intentions to repair it and you may be able to avoid getting it classified as a write off. If it does get classified as a write off it may be that you need to get it inspected before you can legally put it back on the road - depends on the category and I can't remember the rules. If the damage is purely cosmetic, and it sounds like it is, that may not be necessary.

Yes it is just cosmetic, car still drives fine with no mechanical damage. I will make sure the insurance are told of our intentions
Thanks Kevin  :y

If its a Cat D then its a case of repair it on off you go, if its a Cat C then you have to get a VIC check done, can't remember how much one is but its not expensive (less than £50)  :y

I bought a Cat D clit many years ago for £2k (all others selling at £3k) and saw the bent bonnet, and two bent wings where it had gone under the back of a wagon.

When I sold it for £700 - they never did a HPI search so didn't know any different.

Take pics and keep them with the car for the future, but also consider the fact that you can nominate the repair dealer - so find a local bodysprayer who'll quote for parts & let you fit them - saving labour costs  ;)

I'd insist that the assessor comes to the car rather than you deliver the car else where to be assessed. When my wife's car was involved in a similar incident we waited ages for the car to assessed at palce at Trafford Park, where it recieved more damage >:( It gives you a llittle more control of the situation.
