Quick Q re dash bulbs....
« on: 14 November 2008, 19:38:36 »

Simple yet frustrating!  :(
On start up, and the automatic brakelight check with lights on, the display shows a headlight / taillight fault depite all lights being in working order. I have checked all connections as best I can and they seem fine, but I have a bulb out behind the speedo. Not sure how long it has been out, and whether it is the cause of the 'check', but am considering replacing it just in case. I've seen the 'how2' about removing the display unit - is it really that simple to replace the bulb/s?
Cheers..

Yes very easy. Should take you about 10-15 mins to take out the dash clocks. You might want to think about replacing all the bulbs in the dash at least you know there done and not have to take them out if a bulb goes at a later date.

I have never had to disconnect the battery to change any dash bulbs before, on any of the omegas I've had, makes life alot easier not to disconnect the battery otherwise you have the hassle of reseting all the electric windows and the sunroof.

the cause of the brake light check message could be a bulb that the car doesnt like.If you put cheapo bulbs in the car often displays this message. Genuine vx bulbs are probably best.
might be worth a trip to the vx dealer up on the Belfast rd.carriageway (near Helens Bay ?) :y

Correct, exactly what happened to me. Not only that, but I put the brake/tail bulb in the wrong way around so the HV Brake was on Tail and vica versa, if you get my drift. TB sorted the problem. So number one, don't buy cheap bulbs, and two... fit them properly he He. ;D ;D HTH  :y

Find Ring bulbs work ok with Omegas (& BMW which are more finicky about bulb manufacturer!!).  Don't buy Halfords!!

Strangely, in my experience, I've found ring to be equally problematic, similar to halfrauds.  Different being, I can tolerate halfrauds being crap as their bulbs are stupidly cheap with a trade card.

Now got Ring bulbs in back lights on saloon & estate after MID on saloon kept complaining of brake light failure when bulbs were ok.  No probs since they were fitted (about 1 year ago).
Ring bulbs also cured similar issues on mates 52 plate BMW - he'd tried different makes and found BMW & Ring OK.

How? The pins are different heights to stop you from doing so.  :-/

Here speaketh a man who travels..? I had trade status at 'Ballyrobert' but haven't used them in a while due to financial constraints mainly, though I do miss genuine Vx bits. Need to do a coolant change again too, so maybe I will just call in.........

Getting the right dash bulbs is not always that easy.

There are 3 types in my facelift.

1.1W small for the warning lights
2W small for a couple of warning lights
2W big for back illumination

The big 2W are hard to get, I settled for 2.2W in the end.

This plugs into the holder.

But I don't think the warning message checks the dash bulbs. I think you have a connection or bulb problem with your headlamps/tail lamps.
