URGENT Oil Leak Question.
« on: 13 December 2008, 00:36:42 »

Within a day of my V6 having an oil change she has developed an oil leak.

It is coming down from either around or closely above the oil filter.

It does NOT appear to be the head gasket because after over 2 weeks the water reservoir is as clean as a whistle, apart from the antifreese of course. Also..it does appear to be the can gaskets either.

An RAC bloke told me it may be coming from a "breather" pipe.
IS this possible ?

There is NO sign of any leak from the engine bay above and it only becomes visable from below. The result is that I'm taking over my Fathers garage tomorrow and need advice as to what to look for, apart from having the car up on ramps and sticking my head and "not to good" eyes up below the engine.

Any chance the oil filler neck has been disturbed (I think they just twist off?) it could be from there.Otherwise, cam cover gaskets is the usual culprit. :-/
Sorry just re-read your post, thought it said oil filler, have you checked the tightness of the oil filter ?

I had a nasty leak from my filter housing, and it was the seal between the filter housing and the block.

That's if you have the housing and cartridge type filter?

Sounds like oil filter is not seated properly and pressure is pushing oil out around filter body. You will have a much better idea when up in air but I would clean entire area off and let it run and see if you can point to drip..my monies on filter,so may be another oil change and replace filter(cheap enough with tc from VX dealer).

Thank you for you advice chaps. I'll know within an hour or so BUT I'll clean the oil off first as suggested and go from there.
Will perhaps loosened the filter a tad then retightened it.
Will report back.

Well here's hoping. I found that the oil filter wasn't quite tightened up. It was tight but by hand i was able to get half a turn on her so perhaps that was the pulprit. Cleaned everything up and laid underneath with the engine running for a while and no oil re appeared so I'll have to monitor the situation further.

Lets hope that extra bit of "grunt" has stopped the leak.
