Exhaust conundrum
« on: 16 December 2008, 09:52:55 »

My previously slightly leaky exhaust system has deteriorated a bit faster than I expected and I now have an urgent need to change it before the MOT in early January. :-[

I had previously been thinking about getting a stainless system fitted but the slight blow by the back box that I currently have has been getting on my nerves and I'm wondering if I can live with the extra noise.

I thought about getting a system from Eternal just to chuck on for now, but they only list Omega systems for 2.5 and 3.0 to 2001 - in common with most exhaust suppliers on the web, it seems. They categorically stated that they don't have a system that will fit my 3.2. Nowhere have I found parts for the 3.2 listed, in fact. The closest I have come is a 2.6 system.

I need both centre sections and a back box, and, given recent reports of the quality of main dealer systems that's not an option.

Does anyone know what the interchangability of the systems is? 2.6 / 3.2 clearly have different cat sections compared with the 2.5 / 3.0, but does this mean the centre sections are different? Presumably the 2.6 system will fit but with a single tail pipe from the back box? Will a pre-2001 back box fit a facelift? Even with a little "modification"?

Any supplier recommendations?

TIA,

Kevin

Eternalcar system for 3.0 will fit a 3.2 aswell but the dual tailpipes are 3 inches too short for a facelift but fine on a pre 00 model year.
I have fitted on to my facelift x reg 3.0mv6 and its been fine except for the tail pipes being slightly hidden.
Did 600 miles to Germany last week and noise level similar to old oe clamshell type system and quieter than what gm sell for @250 trade club.
Also a very good fit and easy to assembe centres into back box.
at @100 you cant go wrong.

Get a stainless system, you know it makes sense; and move those secondary lambda sensors whilst you're at it.

I wish you'd got in touch sooner; I have literally just (this morning) given away my 3.2 back box from the garage to another member who was stuck with the same problem. Not that I resent him having it, but I owe you a few favours and would have chosen you over him had you both come along with the need at the same time (no offence Kieran).

AFAIK the 2.6 and 3.2 systems are interchangeable, but I wouldn't bother, ultimately it is a false economy in the long run.

I must admit that I thought that the 3.0 was a 1:2 system at the back-box, whilst the 3.2 is a 2:2

Only difference is in the back boxes.

2.6 single pipe, 3.2 twin

Thanks for your thoughts, all. I had forgotten that I was going to move the Lambda sensors too; but that must mean I'm successfully ignoring the constant emsissions warning light now. ;)

I suspect what I do will depend on timescales. It's not the best time of year for it to decide to fall apart. :(

best cure for emissionlight is to remove the bulb.................if it passes the emmissions test no need for the warning.............

That's just stupid. If you remove the bulb and get a serous issue when it is supposed to flash you wouldn't know. You would also not be able to do the pedal trick to keep a check on the errors unless you had a Tech2 (Kevin has at resent got one, but that's not the point).

Better to have the light and live with it or get the sensors moved, but don't remove the bulb.

Emmisions bulb is not the engine management bulb

Understood, but it is still stupid to remove it. When my bulb went every time I asked TB for advice about anything the 1st thing he always came back with was "get the bulb fixed".

Kevin

At least you've got the option of evicting the hairdressers car MX5(?) and the Westfield and using the garage!

I've spent the last couple of days on the drive stripping a Rover Head, working on a Passat, which now needs new cats and lambda sensors, and replacing the exhaust on a Volvo 940! :o :o :o

Not bad for my rest days! :o :o Out on the pop with the guys from work tomorrow... Midday in the pub start :y :y :y
